Victor Valdes' career at Manchester United all but over after Van Gaal's public rant

Spanish goalkeeper Victor Valdes’ future looks set away from Old Trafford after Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal publicly criticised the 33-year-old, Sky Sports reported.

Speaking at a press conference held to present United’s latest signings in Seattle yesterday, the Dutchman said that the former Barcelona shot-stopper would be leaving the club as he did not fit into his philosophy.

Speculation has been rife about Valdes’ future ever since he was left out of the United squad that left for its pre-season tour to the US on Monday. His agent had insisted however that his client is not interested in a move away after talking down a move to Turkish club Antalyaspor. More recently, press reports had indicated that Valdes could head back to his home country with Valencia interested in securing his signature.

Van Gaal has now confirmed that Valdes is definitely on his way out as he found him no longer eligible to fit into the way he likes to run the team.

“He is not selected because he doesn’t follow our philosophy and there is no place for that one player,” Van Gaal said.

Elaborating further on the subject, the 63-year-old said: “Philosophy is how you play football and how you maintain your match rhythm. When you are not willing to follow the principles of the philosophy, then there is only one way and that is out.”

Valdes refused to play for second team

The former Dutch national team manager said that Valdes’ refusal to turn out for the reserve team was one of the major factors that led him to take the drastic decision of leaving him out from the tour party.

“If you do not play in the first team, our philosophy is to play in the second team. He refused to do that last year. That is one aspect of our philosophy, but there are a lot of other aspects in the philosophy of how you have to play like a goalkeeper at Manchester United,” Van Gaal said.

The Dutchman also expressed dissatisfaction at how Valdes responded after being given a chance to resurrect his career at United. The Spaniard, who had been training at United since October 2014, signed an eighteen-month contract with the Old Trafford club in the winter transfer window.

“It is a big disappointment. A pity, because we gave him the opportunity to rehabilitate and then gave him a contract. Then when he is fit to play, he doesn’t do that (for the second team),” the United manager added.

Unhappy with De Gea questions

Meanwhile, the future of United’s first choice keeper is also a burning issue with Real Madrid pursuing the signature of the Spanish keeper for quite some time now. Van Gaal got irritated when he was asked about De Gea and chose not to give away anything as reported by the Irish Examiner.

“His attitude is fantastic and I have said that already,” Van Gaal said. “It is stupid to keep asking about his attitude.”

De Gea has joined Manchester United for their pre-season tour to the US with Anders Lindegaard being the second choice keeper.

Some senior sources at the club are suggesting that De Gea could stay on at Old Trafford as Real Madrid have not been ready to meet the asking price for the shot-stopper. This means that there is a possibility that the 24-year-old may be part of the team when the season starts.
