Video: Monaco's goalkeeper workouts to deal with deflections is ingenious
We always see goalkeepers failing to make saves when the ball is deflected into the net. Tough luck, right?
Not if you’re a goalkeeper at Ligue 1 club AS Monaco. They cover all their bases to make sure goalkeepers Danijel Subasic, Maarten Stekelenburg and Marc-Aurele Caillard are always in control of the situation.
What the coaches do is keep a steel barrier prone on the ground and kick shots at it. The ball hits the make-shift ramp, and depending on the angle it hits the bars, it rises up in a totally different direction.
This forces the goalkeeper to literally be on his toes to ensure that he gets a hand to it, irrespective of the direction he is moving in.Published 14 Nov 2014, 15:32 IST
