Canadian-born Portuguese defender Steven Vitoria has signed a four-year contract with Benfica, the Lisbon club have announced.

The 26-year-old, who was born in Toronto and has played for Portugal at under-19 and under-20 level, joins last year’s Primeira Liga runners-up from Estoril.

Benfica are looking to strengthen their squad and have in recent weeks have signed three Serbia internationals: attacking midfielder Filip Djuricic and forwards Lazar Markovic and Miralem Sulejmani.

The club last season had been in line for a historic treble but lost the league to Porto, were beaten in the Europa League final by Chelsea and then came off second-best to Vitoria de Guimaraes in the Portuguese cup final.
