Wayne Rooney says John Terry is the toughest defender he has played against

Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney has revealed that Chelsea captain John Terry is the best defender he has faced throughout his career.

The 28-year-old has faced a variety of accomplished defenders across the world throughout his prestigious career with the Red Devils and England, but when asked to name his most formidable opponent, the answer was close to home.

The forward declared: “I’d say John Terry, he’s tall and he’s strong.”

Rooney has come up against Terry on a number of occasions during the rivalry United have enjoyed with the west Londoners in recent years and also played alongside him for the Three Lions.

But while Rooney is assured of a place in Roy Hodgson’s squad for the World Cup in Brazil, it appears the Blues skipper will stay grounded.

The former England captain has encountered a string of off the field issues in recent years which led to his retirement from international football.

Calls for Terry to be reinstated appear to have fallen on deaf ears as Hodgson looks set to overlook the centre-back despite his outstanding performances throughout the campaign.

However, with a far from experienced and settled back four set to line up for England in Brazil, the team would undoubtedly benefit from Terry’s presence.
