Why I'm happy Chelsea are paying Roberto di Matteo £130k per week to do nothing

Juventus v Chelsea FC - UEFA Champions League

Roberto Di Matteo

After signing a two year contract Roberto Di Matteo is reportedly still being paid £130k per week as Chelsea pay off his contract, yet whilst the numbers are staggering given what he delivered I am happy for him to keep banking these humongous cheques.

This is standard practice and has seen Jose Mourinho, Felipe Scolari and almost every manager in the Abramovich era receive a payoff after leaving the club, the notable exceptions being interim managers Guus Hiddink and the FSW.

The Di Matteo situation continues until the summer because he was unable to reach a settlement with Roman Abramovich (who would want to negotiate after being dumped for an inferior product). Therefore he is still entitled to the money for the duration of his contract.

Andre Villas Boas was receiving payouts but when he got a job with Spurs Chelsea were no longer required to pay saving the club more than £10m.

The same would apply for Di Matteo however few clubs are likely to offer him similar so he has little incentive to pick anything but the perfect job.

I guess this shows that I would be willing to pay anybody to do absolutely nothing for a year and a half, so long as they deliver a Champions League.

There is and only ever will be ONE DI MATTEO!
