Why José Mourinho to Manchester United is an acceptable compromise

Jose Mourinho
Jose Mourinho is a serial winner

Aah Mourinho! When will you arrive and save us from this nightmare? I hope all the reports about a pre-contract being signed are true. More than that I hope a penalty clause agreement was insisted upon (as has been reported) when the alleged pre-contract was signed.

If there is one thing that can get through the current management at old Trafford and especially the “financial genius” who is Ed Woodward then it’s the thought of losing money. That’s all that matters these days apparently, not attacking football nor footballing success but the growth of Manchester United as a worldwide ‘brand’ (very exciting for us as fans).

While I wanted Louis van Gaal to be given a fair chance and some patience, I would like to admit that LVG has used up all the patience I had and then some. In this blog, I want to list three reasons why I think Mourinho is the ideal candidate to take over at old Trafford

Duh! He is a serial winner

Love him or hate him you cannot deny the fact that Mourinho wins, period. No matter what odds are stacked against him he will find a way to win. Titles all around the world with a number of clubs point towards his capability of finding a way to win the biggest of prizes.

Not only does he win but he ensures that his teams are never bullied even when playing against the top teams – that they are always prepared tactically and mentally when facing any opponent something not evident in this United team.

His greatest achievement for me though is the Liga BBVA title in 2011-12 which he won with Real Madrid with a record point’s total of 100 points against Pep Guardiola’s Barcelona – a feat that can be considered even more remarkable when you consider that the biggest summer purchase for Real Madrid was Fabio Coentrao.

“Jose understands that winning and losing are twins in a way, when you win you don’t gloat and when you lose don’t go bananas”- Sir Alex Ferguson

He’s never brought through youth, but has anyone ever asked him to?

The fact that he doesn’t have any reputation of promoting youth seems to be going against Mourinho when it comes to the United job. Do you know who had a great reputation in promoting youth? David Moyes. Louis Van Gaal has an even greater reputation as a manager who hones the talent in the youth ranks and makes them first team ready (which is probably the only reason why he still has a job).

We all know how wonderfully joyous those two coaches have been for Manchester united. Let’s be honest Mourinho did not win the Champions League with Porto on the back of spending hundreds of millions on top drawer talent, now did he? Nor are Real Madrid and Chelsea, clubs famous for showing patience to managers who develop home grown talent.

It’s not as though Roman Abramovich bought Chelsea and asked Mourinho to qualify for the Champions League with a team filled with home-grown talent. He was asked to bring instant success which he delivered by relying on a core of experienced, battle-hardened and talented players.

Mourinho will bring in the signings united need to be competitive again

If everything goes as per expectation then this is going to be the second time in the past three seasons that the Red Devils have failed to qualify for the Champions League, a criteria that must be bare minimum for a club of United’s resources and stature.

Money has been spent, in large sums and rather foolishly. Majority of the signings made have not shown whether they have it in them to be first team players, while the one truly outstanding player signed was jettisoned because he couldn’t get along with the manager (you know who it is).

With Mourinho at the helm, United will be well placed to attract the best talent despite the fact that they are unable to offer Champions League football next season – maybe even a special someone named Zlatan

“Mourinho would become a guy I was basically willing to die for”- Zlatan Ibrahimovic
