There have been reports in various sections of British media in recent days that Inter Milan could propose a swap deal to Manchester United which could see Mauro Icardi and Romelu Lukaku exchange places for the upcoming season.

Although this move has the potential to become the deal of the next transfer window, it remains to be seen if this idea could actually materialise.

Manchester United's move for Romelu Lukaku broke many transfer records a few seasons ago. The Belgian was excellent in his first season, but he has not been able to find his foot since then.

Despite productive stints with his country, Lukaku has failed to replicate the performances with his club, which has now pushed him behind Marcus Rashford as the club's first-choice striker.

On the other hand, Mauro Icardi's situation is different at his club. Although he has been in good form for the Milan club, the Argentine has had to face a number of off-field issues which has deteriorated his relationship with the club. He has recently been stripped of his captaincy which could well mean that Icardi would be leaving the club in the summer.

Although a swap deal involving both strikers could sound ideal for both clubs, it is the Old Trafford club which may have to make the difficult decision.

Although Romelu Lukaku has had a lacklustre season, the Belgian is a fine talent. He is someone who can create chances halfway through the pitch as a striker, and his physicality is always an added bonus.

He is still young and could turn out be a world-class striker in few more seasons. Manchester United has already invested a lot on him and it would not be a wise decision to let go of him without the Belgian realising his full potential.

On the other hand, signing Icardi would be a gamble for Manchester United. Apart from his huge transfer fee, Icardi may find it difficult to guarantee consistent goals. The nature of Premier League football is different, and if an experienced player like Icardi fails, it would be a letdown for both the club and player.

On a personal front, if Lukaku does have to leave Manchester United, his next destination has to be a club of similar or better aspirations like Juventus, Bayern Munich, or Real Madrid.

Hence, Manchester United must make sure that they are not tempted into this potential deal next summer.
