Why Philippe Coutinho to Manchester United won't happen in the 2019 summer transfer window

Manchester United are considered to be one of the biggest clubs in the Premier League. The club has won 20 league titles and is looking like the old Manchester club, under the guidance of coach Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. The team has lost only one match against PSG in all competitions since he has been at the helm. The Reds have recently knocked out Chelsea from FA Cup and is going strength to strength as the season progresses.

In the January transfer window, Philippe Coutinho was on the radar of Manchester United according to The Guardian. The move didn't materialize as there was no formal bid and can be considered as a mere rumour only. The club might look for him in the summer transfer window but there are various reasons why this transfer won't happen.

One reason that can go against this move, is the big transfer fee of £142m that Barca paid to secure his services from Liverpool. It has only been one year since he arrived and the Spanish league leaders won't like to sell him cheap; if they think about selling him. Based on the current performances, the chances are high that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will get the permanent role at Manchester United. So, he can pursue more than one player for this much amount.

Another reason can be that Manchester United already have Anthony Martial and Alexis Sanchez on the position where Coutinho operates, preferably. Martial has recently signed a new contract and will fancy his chances in the first-team. Though Sanchez has not performed at his top level at United, Solskjaer would prefer to keep him as a back-up rather than having Coutinho warming the bench.

Another factor that can go against his move to Old Trafford is that the former Liverpool star is currently struggling in Spanish football. His form has dipped largely and is not getting much game time under his belt. Manchester United might look for someone like Kylian Mbappe if they agree to pay a whopping amount as he is in some ominous form. So, a whopping amount for a struggling player might not be suitable for any club.

The final reason is the fact that a club like Barcelona might not look to sell him for not performing at the top level in one year. The La Liga side had invested a significant amount for him and would likely to give him a fair run of matches in next seasons, to prove his mettle. Therefore, the chance of him moving to United looks bleak.
