Is SpongeBob getting a Fortnite skin? Well, with the way things are and given a few circumstances, the possibility of this "sea sponge" coming into the game is unusually high.

Rumors of the character getting his own skin in-game have been in circulation for a while now. Given how popular of a cartoon character he is, it's no surprise that the community wants him to join the metaverse.

While his arrival would have made sense back in Chapter 2 Season 3, when the entire island was flooded, he'll no doubt make headlines whenever he gets added in. That said, while there's no official confirmation of the skin in the works, there are a few visible telltale signs.

SpongeBob's debut in Fortnite is edging closer to becoming a reality

Here are a few known facts that hint towards SpongeBob SquarePants' involvement in Fortnite. For one, he has been featured in several surveys over the past few months, including the latest survey, which was conducted last week.

While this does not indicate that the character is being added to the game, it does signify that the community likes the idea of it happening. Since Epic Games uses data from multiple surveys to plan accordingly for future collaborations and crossovers, this provides a glimmer of hope.

The second important thing to note is that SpongeBob SquarePants recently featured in Fall Guys. He's been added in as a skin alongside other characters such as Mr. Krabs, Sandy Cheeks, Patrick Star, and of course Squidward.

With Epic Games owning the studio (Mediatonic) that created Fall Guys, which has obtained the licensing for SpongeBob, it's safe to assume it could be extended for other games as well.

While that's another digital dilemma in its own right, it's not too outlandish to imagine. Considering that it's a win-win situation for everyone involved, it'll be good for business. However, things aren't exactly as straightforward as they would seem.

What's stopping SpongeBob Squarepants from coming to Fortnite?

With licensing well in order, the only thing that seems to be stopping SpongeBob from coming to Fortnite is likely design restrictions. Given how the characters are shaped, it's rather difficult to have them as skins in the game.

Unlike other major collaborations like Arcane: League of Legends, Halo, and more recently Dragon Ball, creating skins for characters from SpongeBob will prove challenging. However, there is one workaround that can be implemented.

Rather than adopting and using the characters from the show SpongeBob SquarePants, the developers could use their alternative versions from The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water.

While this may look very different from the cartoon version, it would fit perfectly into Fortnite's wacky and weird collection of skins. With a few modifications, they'll be ready for their next big adventure in the metaverse.

Speaking of which, according to rumors, there may be plans for SpongeBob and his gang to arrive on the island sometime in 2023. However, keep in mind that this is all based on speculation at this point.

With restrictions in design being the only major noticeable factor holding back the collaboration, Epic Games may fast-track a solution to get the ball rolling. If all goes well, players will soon be running about dressed as Squidward playing the clarinet in-game.
