The Nintendo Switch 2, one of the most anticipated consoles of all time, is finally available for purchase globally. With new and improved Joy-Cons (dubbed Joy-Con 2), a bigger display, and much powerful hardware than the previous generation, Nintendo seems to have gone all out with its latest offering. However, many gamers who have been playing multiplayer and co-op titles on their original Switch might wonder if its Joy-Cons are compatible with the new Nintendo Switch 2.

The original Joy-Cons cannot be used for the Switch 2's handheld mode, as the screen as well as the controllers for the new device are drastically bigger than the predecessor. However, when the new handheld is docked or in tabletop mode, you certainly can use your older Joy-Cons to play on it. For those wondering why anyone would need older Joy-Cons with a new console, it's simply a good option to have while playing co-op titles such as Mario Kart World or the upcoming Super Mario Party Jamboree with your friends and family.

If you don't have an extra pair of Joy-Cons 2 or a Pro Controller for your Switch 2, your older Joy-Cons can still come in handy. To connect them to the latest handheld, you just have to follow some basic steps:

  • On the main menu screen of your console itself, you will find a "Controllers" option. Here, click on "Change Grip/Order."
  • Now, press L+R on your Joy-Cons at the same time.
  • Once this is done, hold your Joy-Cons sideways, and between the SL and SR buttons, you will find a small button. Press it once, and you will see a green moving light. Now, press and hold the circular button again to finally connect your Joy-Cons to your Switch 2.

When attempting this pairing, make sure not to have any other Nintendo Switch or Switch 2 around, or the Joy-Cons might connect automatically to some other console.

Note that the Switch 1 Joy-Cons cannot be charged directly using the Switch 2. You will need to charge them via your original Switch only.
