With the release of emulators on the App Store, could we see sideloading soon?

In an interesting turn of events, Apple has permitted the release of the Delta emulator on its App Store. This is the first such release of an application on the Store, making it quite a significant change in the company's usual policy. Delta was previously only accessible via the AltStore and required sideloading via an admittedly complicated process.

The official release of this app brings into speculation whether Apple will enable sideloading soon.

The Delta emulator was stealthily released for iOS and Mac devices today, April 18, 2024. Developed by Riley Testut, the app was only available in the AltStore before the official release on the App Store.

This version of the emulator contains no significant differences from the AltStore version and is capable of emulating the following systems:

  • Nintendo Entertainment System
  • Super Nintendo Entertainment System
  • Nintendo 64
  • GameBoy Color
  • GameBoy Advance
  • Nintendo DS

The app also supports cheats, skins, hacks, and other quality-of-life improvements like DualSense and Xbox Series X/S controller support.

The official release of this app is sure to be monumental in shifting Apple's policy toward third-party apps and a general list of allowed items on the App Store, which has historically remained rather locked down to this day. The release of other emulator systems and similar apps that are otherwise only available on Android ecosystems may soon follow suit.

Delta is available for users outside the European Union directly on the Store. Users in the EU will have to download the app via the third-party AltStore PAL storefront instead. The app is also entirely free of charge.

Sideloading seems only a matter of time

With the ultimate release of alternative App Stores (thanks to the recent tussle between the EU and Apple), sideloading may soon be a reality. Users in the European Union already have access to AltStore PAL as of April 18, 2024, which includes Delta and Clip. Alternative marketplaces are soon expected to follow in quick succession, and these are expected to mature over time.

Sideloading is definitely the future going forward, and it will be interesting to see how Apple deals with this in the future, given the company's hard stance on the topic in the past.

Installing these apps still is not as seamless as anticipated, however, with multiple warnings and pop-ups slowing down the process. Hopefully, things transition smoothly going forward, and sideloading apps become as seamless as seen within Android devices.
