What's the story?
While, when it comes to video games and WWE, the WWE 2K series gets most of the attention, you can't forget they're pretty high-quality collection of mobile game titles as well.
And, in that vein, WWE today has announced a partnership with mobile developer Reliance Games and a new upcoming mobile title, WWE Mayhem.
In case you didn't know....
WWE has been pretty savvy when it comes to the mobile app/game market.
The actual WWE Mobile app, which was originally designed to act as both a substitute for WWE.com, as well as offer fans a "second screen experience" for their TV shows, now still does the former while giving subscribers access to WWE Network on the go.
They've also been pretty inventive when it comes to games. WWE Immortals, WWE Champions, WWE Tap Mania, WWE Super Card all take the WWE brand into genres they couldn't do on a home console (and, believe us, they've tried - anyone remembers WWF Crush Hour?).
The heart of the matter
According to the press release that hit the wire today. WWE Mayhem will bring "action and entertainment for the entire family with simple gameplay mechanics for casual players and deep progression elements for core gamers."
Currently in development, the game will allow players to not only control WWE Superstars on the current roster, but also legends such as Stone Cold Steve Austin, The Rock, Goldberg, and The Undertaker.
The game will also include "unlockable content when used in conjunction with items from a forthcoming Mattel action figure line."
What's next?
WWE Mayhem is the first game from Reliance in a multi-year agreement with WWE.
Depending on how long the agreement lasts, this will probably be the only release the two parties collaborate on, but as with most mobile games, the agreement will cover not just the game itself, but additions and updates over the course of time.
Author's take
WWE has done an excellent job of diversifying their mobile games library, even if not every title has been, well, exceptional (that game with The Rock was pretty much the Baywatch movie of mobile games).
Much like wrestling itself, when the mobile games are good, they're great (thank you, Max Landis). Let's hope this partnership with Reliance will follow that same path.
