Commonwealth Games 2018

4 Apr 2018 - 15 Apr 2018

As Australia gears up to host some of the best sports talents from across the globe, the picturesque Gold Coast City in Queensland will be buzzing with excitement as the 2018 Commonwealth Games will be contested at the iconic venue from the 4th - 15th April 2018.

The multi-sport event, which will be hosted for the fifth time in 21 editions by Australia will be contested under the games' motto of 'Share the Dream' in a bid to spread the dreams and journey of the contestants and is set to feature a total of 70 countries participating with an approach to crown their campaign with a title victory.

In early 2016, 'Barobi', a blue Koala bear with native stripes was declared as the official mascot for the Commonwealth Games Australia. The colourful emblem of the Commonwealth 2018 is a delineation of the scenic city of Gold Coast which also doubles up as an indicator of the ever-increasing energy and competitive spirit of the athletes.

Home of all events, the Carrara Stadium

Right from hosting the glamorous opening ceremony, Gold Coast's Carrara Stadium will serve as the centre for all the athletic events. Southport Broadwater is set to play host to the swimming and diving event while the newly constructed Coomera Indoor Sports Stadium shapes up to host the Artistic and Rhythmic Gymnastics followed by the netball finals.

While Labrador will serve as the turf ground for Hockey, Oxenford will host three events, namely squash, boxing and table tennis. Rugby 7s will take place at the Robina Stadium while the shooting and cycling competitions will be held at Brisbane. Apart from this, four independent events, Road Cycling, Cycling Time Trial, The Marathon, and Race Walk will take place at separate locations.

While the athletes will compete in some of the best facilities available around the world, they will be housed at the state-of-the-art Athletes Village in Southport, Gold Coast.

70 countries, 18 sports, 275 events

This edition of the Commonwealth Games will see contingents from 70 nations battle it out for the ultimate spoils across 18 sports which will branch out into 275 separate events.

While Athletics, Badminton, Boxing, Hockey, Lawn Bowls, Women's netball, Rugby, Squash, Swimming, and Weightlifting form a part of the core sports category, the other eight sports are also sure to give rise to some riveting battles right throughout the competition.

In what will also be the first of its kind incident as part of the Games, the expansion of the number of events for women will equalize the number of events for both men's and women's categories, a move deeply appreciated across the globe.

What can be expected?

In recent times, athletics and other sports have grabbed a lot of eyeballs with impressive performances garnering constant attention. With over 6000 talented athletes slated to compete at the Games, a lot of nail-biting action can be expected from all the events right through the Commonwealth Games 2018.
