The Presidents Cup is one of the most famous and celebrated biennial professional men's golf series. The tournament consists of a team from the USA competing against an International Team, representing the rest of the world, excluding Europe. The President's Cup started in 1994 and alternates its venues between various other countries represented by the International Team and the US. The 2024 Presidents Cup is all set to take place from September 24 and will go on till September 29 at the Royal Montreal Golf Club in Montreal, Quebec, Canada.
It always takes place in even-numbered years, but a change happened when the 2001 Ryder Cup (U.S. vs. Europe biennial event) was cancelled due to the September 11 attacks, and the President's Cup had to be moved to odd-numbered years. Again, the 2020 COVID pandemic and cancellations of all major tournaments prompted it back to even-numbered years.
The Presidents Cup History
The Presidents Cup was inaugurated in the year 1994 at the Robert Trent Jones Golf Club in Virginia. Its main aim was to hold a charity golf tournament where USA players would compete with the international team. Though quite different from the PGA tournaments, this tournament was still created and organised by them to this day.
There have been several memorable moments, for instance, the 1994 inauguration, where the US team claimed the first-ever victory and the 1998 international team secured their first-ever win at the Royal Melbourne Golf Club in Australia, or the dramatic 2003 tie between Ernie Els and Tiger Woods, as their playoffs couldn't take place due to the darkness at Fancourt Hotel and Country Club Estate in South Africa.
Every year, the contest has an Honorary Chairman or a Chairwoman. Generally, they are the head of state or government of the host nation who organises the tournament. A list of the honorary guests has been given below:
