The Sentry 2024

The Sentry, held on the Hawaiian island of Maui, is the first tournament of the golf season on the PGA Tour. Founded in 1953, the field was formerly limited to golfers who had won a tournament on the tour in the year prior to the event; however, those who had qualified for the previous Tour Championship are now also invited.

It served as the first tour event every year from 1986 to 2013. In the fall of 2013, the PGA Tour moved to a wrap-around schedule, which began in September and ended in August. Cameron Smith won the tournament in 2022 with the lowest 72-hole-to-par score in PGA Tour history (−34).

The 2023 Sentry Tournament of Champions final leaderboard is led by winner Jon Rahm, who reclaimed the title he narrowly lost a year ago with a PGA Tour victory at Kapalua Resort's Plantation Course on Maui, Hawaii.

Rahm triumphed in this 38-player event with a final round score of 10-under 63, overturning a seven-shot deficit with Collin Morikawa to win by a significant margin on 27-under 265. Morikawa, who had a six-shot lead before the final round, shot even-par 73 in the final round, making three bogeys in a row from holes 14–16 to lose the lead and then fail to regain it. Tom Hoge and Max Homa shared the third-place result on a score of 23 under. Of the $15,000,000 purse, Rahm took home the $2,700,000 winner's share.

The 2024 Sentry Tournament of Champions will be held from January 3 to January 7 at the Kapalua Resort (The Plantation Course), Kapalua, Maui, Hawaii, with a $20,000,000 purse, and the winner's share is TBD.

The Sentry 2024 History

The Sentry is played at the Plantation Course at the Kapalua Resort near Lahaina on the Hawaiian island of Maui during the first week of January since 1999. It's a par-73 course, unlike most PGA Tour tournaments.

The event was held at the Desert Inn Country Club in Las Vegas, Nevada, from its start until 1966, and in 1967 and 1968 at the Stardust Country Club, also in Las Vegas. It was performed at Carlsbad, California's La Costa Resort and Spa, for thirty years after that. In May 1985, it moved to January 1986, and in 1999, it went to Maui.

Mutual of New York (MONY) served as the tournament's inaugural title sponsor from 1975 to 1990. Following three years of sponsorship by Infiniti, the Tournament of Champions name was discarded, and Mercedes-Benz, a German automaker, started a 16-year relationship with the event. The tournament was renamed the SBS Championship in 2010 as it signed a new ten-year contract with Korean broadcaster Seoul Broadcasting System.

In 2011, Hyundai assumed title sponsorship, with SBS continuing as a sponsor. After Hyundai took over title sponsorship of the PGA Tour tournament at Riviera Country Club in 2017, SBS was once again the main sponsor. As the title sponsor of the tournament, Sentry Insurance committed to a five-year deal that began in 2018 and was subsequently extended through 2030.

The tournament was one of only two PGA Tour events to employ a Friday-Monday format from 2012 to 2015, together with the Deutsche Bank Championship. The tournament's schedule allowed it to conclude on its own day without clashing with the second day of the NFL Wild Card Playoffs.

The PGA Tour said that the 30 players who qualified for the 2020 Tour Championship as well as the winners of tournaments held in 2020 will be added to the field for the 2021 tournament. After the COVID-19 outbreak forced the cancellation of 10 tournaments, the modification was made.

The 2022 tournament reverted to a winners-only field, although the inclusion of Tour Championship qualifiers was established permanently in 2023. As a result, the Tournament of Champions name was once again dropped for the 2024 event.

The golf and beach resort known as Kapalua Resort is located in Kapalua, Hawaii, close to Lahaina on the northwest coast of the island of Maui. The Maui Land & Pineapple Company owns it.

Covering 22,000 acres (89 km2), the resort is nestled between two natural preserves and old pineapple plantations, stretching from the lush mountain ridges and top of PuŻu Kukui to lava rock bays. Nearby are three beaches as well as zipline rides and activities offered by Kapalua Adventures.

The five-acre (20,000 m2) Kapalua Spa and several eateries and retail establishments, including the famed Honolulu Store, are located within the resort. In addition to offering pineapple farm tours, Kapalua Farms supplies the Maui community and resort restaurants with organic produce and eggs.

From beachside to mountainside, Kapalua Resort offers a variety of residential neighborhoods. It also features the Kapalua Tennis Garden complex, multiple vacation home rental programs, and the Ritz-Carlton Hotel. The Kapalua Adventure Center and the Café Kapalua Cafe offer additional services.

The Sentry 2024 Broadcasting Details

The weekend rounds were regularly televised by ABC Sports while they were held at LaCosta. That being said, network television did not work well with the time difference after the move to Hawaii in 1999. ESPN, ABC's cable partner, will now carry the event in four rounds.

The Golf Channel began airing four rounds of coverage of the event in 2007. In addition to presenting the new Monday final round for its sister network, Golf Channel, NBC Sports started airing weekend play in 2012.

Golf Channel and NBC split Thursday through Sunday coverage starting in 2018, with NBC covering the weekends when it didn't clash with the network's NFL playoff game broadcasts.
