Unlike most pro golfers, JJ Spaun sported a mixed bag at the US Open last week and it won him his first Major title. In fact he was the only player to have an under-par total score at the rain-battered tournament.

Spaun carried a mixed arsenal consisting of clubs from L.A.B, Srixon, Titleist, TaylorMade, and Cleveland brands.

  • Driver: Titleist GT3 (9 degrees)
  • 3-wood: TaylorMade Qi10 (15 degrees)
  • 5-wood: TaylorMade Qi10 (18 degrees)
  • Irons: Srixon ZXi5 (4) Srixon ZXi7 (5-PW)
  • Wedges: Cleveland RTX ZipCore (50), Cleveland RTZ (54), Cleveland RTX 6 ZipCore (60)
  • Putter: L.A.B. Golf DF3
  • Grips: Golf Pride Tour Velvet
  • Ball: Srixon Z-Star Diamond

After NUCLR Golf posted about the recent US Open winner's 'mixed bag' at Oakmont, fans had a positive reaction to the move.

Some fans even suggested that Rory McIlroy practice a similar method as the five-time Major champion has struggled with his equipment in recent times.

"Rory should learn from him."

"Smart man playing what works for him and not what the manufacturers force you to try and demo...You end up in the endless cycle like Rory testing new clubs every week," one fan said.
"A lot of guys would probably be better off if they didn’t take the bag and become restricted to playing only one brand throughout the bag. Smart move," another wrote.

"Good for him. Using what works for him instead of using what his sponsors told him to use," one fan commented.

However, some fans acknowledged the hard truth about sponsorships and why players generally don't have the flexibility to carry a mixed bag.

"Should be more normal, but sponsorships exist, so we get Tiger playing Nike drivers when he should have been playing Titleist."

One fan even predicted a similar future for JJ Spaun in the coming weeks.

"Not for long. Major club deal incoming," one fan claimed.

JJ Spaun ended a three-year trophy drought with his win at the US Open.

The 34-year-old recorded a clean score card with four birdies in Round 1. His performance slipped a bit in Round 2 after hitting 2-over 72 with four birdies and six bogeys.

However, Spaun made a quick recovery by posting three birdies and two bogeys to score 1-under 69 on moving day. He started his final round on Sunday (June 15) on a disastrous note, by shooting five bogeys on the first six holes.

But the PGA Tour star managed to stage an incredible comeback by hitting four birdies by the end of the day. In total, he carded four birdies and six bogeys to score 2-over 72 in the final round. With a total score of 1-under, he clinched his maiden US Open victory.
