2nd Men’s Hockey World League Round 2: South Africa drub Trinadad & Tobago 10-2

World number 10 South Africa overcame an early stutter to overpower Trinadad & Tobago 10-2 to rack up their fourth straight win in the second men’s Hockey World League Round 2 tournament, being played in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Marcus James stunned the South African camp to silence with a 4th minute strike. South Africans’ riposte was quick – Lloyd Norris Jones unleashed a potent reverse hit shot which brooked no answer from the Trinadad & Tobago shot stopper.

Pierre de Voux put the South Africans ahead in the 10th minute before Lloyd Norris Jones struck (3-1) in the 12th minute.

Soon South Africa were all over the Trinadad & Tobago citadel – Clint Panther made it 4-1 in the 14th minute.

Down 1-4 in the first 15 minutes, Trinadad & Tobago looked a demoralized outfit.

De Voux rattled the cage for South Africa’s fifth goal snap-flick in the 24th minute.

Tim Drummond further compounded the woes of Trinadad & Tobago when he sounded the board in the 27th minute as South Africa went into half-time with a 6-1 lead.

South Africa maintained an attacking momentum in the second half. Julian Hykes breached the Trinadad & Tobago defence in the 39th minute (7-1).

Matt Guise-Brown converted a penalty stroke in the 54th minute. Miguel da Graca found the target in the 55th minute as the South Africans struck for the ninth time. Julian added another to his tally, scoring the team’s tenth goal in the 56th minute.

Christopher Scipio scored for Trinidad & Tobago in the 57th minute but it had little impact on the final outcome as South Africa ran out worthy winners (10-2).

In another match, world number 10 Argentina routed Chile 6-0. Nahuel Salis gave the blue and white brigade the lead in the 20th minute.

Argentina led 1-0 at the break.

Lucas Rossi enhanced the lead in the 37th minute. Matias Parede struck the team’s third goal, making the most of a fine interception from Lucas Villa.

Matias Paredes added his second as Argentina took a 4-0 lead.

Augustin Mazzilli made it 5-0 in the 63rd minute before Matias Paredes completed a fine hat-trick.

In the third game of the match, United States pipped Brazil 5-0. Tyler Sundeen (11th minute), William Holt (13th minute), Manuel Martinez (17th minute), William Holt (35th minute) and Mohan Gandhi(41t minute) socred for the winners.
