The trend of biopics on sportspersons is gathering serious momentum in the Bollywood industry and after the likes of Sachin Tendulkar, MS Dhoni, the Phogat sisters, Milkha Singh and Mary Kom, another Indian sporting great is set to have a movie made on his glittering career.

A biopic on Balbir Singh Sr., one of the greatest hockey players to have ever graced the sport, is in the works and playing the lead role will be star actor Akshay Kumar. The movie is titled 'Gold' and will be based on the story of Singh, who led India to three consecutive Olympic gold medals in 1948, 1952 and 1956.

Singh is regarded as one of the best players the sport and the nation have ever seen and he holds the record for the most goals scored by an individual in an Olympic final after his five-goal spree in India's 6-1 win over Holland in the 1952 Olympics final.

The movie will be directed by Reema Kagti and produced by Ritesh Sidhwani and Farhan Akhtar. It will feature the likes of Mouni Roy, Kunal Kapoor, Amit Sadh and Sunny Kaushal in the supporting cast.

The shooting for the film is underway in the UK, with the film being set in London. It will represent India's first-ever Olympic gold as an independent nation and promises to be a real thriller. It is scheduled to release on Independence Day in 2018.

People on Twitter went wild after the announcement and wished the star actor good fortune for his upcoming project. Here are the best reactions:
