Bhubaneshwar to host 2014 FIH Champions Trophy

The next edition of the Champions Trophy will be held in Bhubaneshwar

Bhubaneshwar will be the host city for next year’s Men’s Champions Trophy Hockey Tournament between December 13th and 21st. It will be the 35th edition of the tournament.

The 8-team tournament will be held at the Kalinga Stadium.

The stadium, which is presently under renovation, is scheduled to be back up to speed by then and be fully equipped to host the event, confirmed Hockey India secretary general Narinder Batra.

He also said that the event will be a joint collaboration between Hockey India and the state government of Orissa.

“It has been more than a month that we have allocated the Champions Trophy to Orissa and it will be held in Bhubaneshwar,” Batra said.

“We have full support from the Orissa government. The stadium will have two astroturfs, one is ready and the work on the other is going on. The Orissa government has assured us that the entire construction work will be completed by June next year,” added Batra.

Batra also felt that with the Kalinga Stadium’s comparatively larger capacity and the growing popularity of the game in Orissa will draw huge crowds to the event.
