DU Champions held to a goalless draw

The day two of sports festival at SGTB Khalsa College saw fancied teams struggling to find fluency. There were some closely fought contests in hockey and volleyball with Delhi University champions SGTB Khalsa College held to a goalless draw in hockey and Delhi State Juniors securing a hard fought two sets to one victory in volleyball.

The day began with hosts SGTB Khalsa College buckling under home pressure as a tenacious Shamlal College played out a listless draw in Pool A match of the Praveen Kaur Memorial Hockey Tournament. In another Pool A match, BSES upset much fancied Kirori Mal College 2-1. Ravi Kumar of BSES was adjudged Man of the match.

In the Rattan Singh Memorial Volleyball Tournament, the matches were evenly contested on day two. Delhi Police had to play out of their skins to get a win against YMCA. Delhi Police beat YMCA in two closely fought sets 25-19, 29-27 in an exciting Pool B encounter. However, the match of the day was played between Delhi State Juniors and YMCA. Delhi State Juniors held their nerve to win a thrilling match against YMCA. The match went down to the wire and Delhi State Juniors emerged winners by two sets to one (25-27, 25-23 and 16-14).

Former international basketball player and now ACP at Delhi Police, Narendra Gupta was among the eminent personalities who came to watch the proceedings on the second day of this multi-sport fest. Speaking to Sportskeeda, he said that the tournament was a great platform for teams to prepare for spring competition.

“The standard of competition is quite good. However, the government must spend more funds at the grassroots level to groom young players who can be future torchbearers of Indian sport.”

Dr. Sudarshan Pathak, ex-secretary of Delhi University Sports Council, who was also part of the high-profile visitors attending the sports festival, said that such sports events should be organised every year and efforts should be made to grow the institutional sport stronger and bigger.
