Error prone India beaten by England in Hockey World League Final opener

India faced off against England in their opening match of the Hockey World League Final at the Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium in New Delhi.

India, who are among the lowest ranked teams in the tournament, recently hired Terry Walsh as their new coach and hoped to get off to a good start, but did anything but that, as they were beaten by a well drilled English side.

England were the first to make an attack of any sorts in the 6th minute, without an end product though, as Indian goalkeeper Sreejesh made a good stop.

Terry Walsh deployed VR Raghunath in midfield rather than his customary full back position for a few minutes. The Indian team saw more of the possession but it was England who were impressive in their coordination.

The first penalty corner went to India but they were not able to make anything out of it, England were awarded their first penalty corner in the 22nd minute but just like India they too could not convert it.

They were awarded another soon due to an infringement by Kothajit, and this time Adam Dixon scored to give England the lead.India could not conjure any chances until the 2nd half.

England were looking for a second and did just that when they were awarded a penalty corner in the 45th minute . India had a chance to hit back immediately, but again , could not convert their chances.

Rupinder thought that he had reduced the arrears for India but the goal was ruled out after England opted for a video referral.

India failed to muster any more chances and at the end of 70 minutes and the score read 2-0 in favour of England at the final hooter.

India next play New Zealand tomorrow in their second group game, once again at 8 pm.
