Khelo India 2019: Haryana to face Odisha for men’s U-21 hockey gold

Pune, Jan 13: Favourites Odisha and Haryana took their places in Tuesday’s final of the men’s Under-21 hockey final of the Khelo India Youth Games 2019 in contrasting fashion. In Sunday’s semi-finals, Haryana outplayed neighbors Punjab 3-1 while Odisha was stretched in beating Uttar Pradesh 2-1.

In women’s Under-17 and Under-21 action at the Mahindra Hockey Stadium, Punjab, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh emerged winners on the day.

In the men’s U-21 semis, Haryana rode on goals from skipper Mandeep Mor (12th minute), Yashdeep Siwach (45th) and Kuldeep (46th) to get the better of Punjab 3-1 with some ease. For the losing side, Karajwinder Singh (23th) scored a consolation goal.

The second semi-final was a much closer affair with Odisha having to work hard for their 2-1 result against UP. Odisha rammed in two goals within the opening six minutes through Nilam Sanjeep Xess (4th) and Krishna Tirkey (6th) to set UP on their heels, but the latter thereafter mounted steady pressure in search for goals.

Odisha was stretched in holding on and could not deny Manish Rajbhar in the 42nd minute, which was the closest UP got to an equalizer.

On Tuesday, UP and Punjab play the third place classification match at 2 pm with the Odisha-Haryana final at 4 pm.

In U-17 women's action, Jharkhand and Chandigarh played out a 2-2 draw in Pool A after both had won their respective opening matches on Saturday.

Chandigarh led twice through Kavita (13th minute) and Barkha (45th) only to concede equalizer on both occasions, Jharkhand’s goal-getters being Ropni Kumari (38th) and Beauty Dung Dung (57th).

In another Pool A match, Punjab defeated Delhi 7-0 for their first win of the competition. Simranjeet Kaur (34th, 40th, 43rd, 46th) led the way with Taranpreet Kaur (35th, 47th) and Sneha Sabharwal (21th) also chipping in.

In the U-21s, Haryana beat Punjab 3-2 in Pool B with goals from Amrinder Kaur (12th), Amandeep Kaur (20th) and Anu (52th) while Baljeet Kaur (26th, 43th) got on the score-sheet for Punjab.

In the other pool game, UP beat Chandigarh 4-1. Goals for Uttar Pradesh came from Sonal Tiwari (10th, 45th), Anshika Singh (51st) and skipper Mumtaz Khan (55th) while Chandigarh's captain Harmanpreet Kaur (21th) scored her team's only goal.

In Pool A, both matches ended in draws as Jharkhand and Odisha played out a goal-less game and Mizoram held hosts Maharashtra 1-1.
