Hockey legend Leslie Claudius hospitalised

Former Indian hockey player and Olympic gold medallist Leslie Claudius during a ceremony to felicitate former hockey players who have won gold medals in the Olympics and to wish Hockey team squad leaving for London Olympics.

Kolkata - Legendary hockey player Leslie Claudius has been admitted to a city hospital with a liver ailment, a hospital official said on Saturday.

“He was admitted to our hospital on Tuesday. He has cirrhosis of liver and has accumulated water in his body. He is completely bed bound but responding well to treatment,” assistant medical superintendent, Calcutta Medical Research Institute (CMRI), Sudeshna Lahiri told IANS.

Lahiri said several tests would be conducted in the next few days before fixing a date for his discharge.

West Bengal sports minister Madan Mitra Saturday visited Claudius and announced a financial help of Rs. 1 lakh.

The last doyen of Indian hockey’s golden generation, Claudius won four consecutive Olympic medals including three golds.
