When Manpreet Singh was given the captain’s armband last year, not many questioned the decision. For, Manpreet is a natural leader and is surely a successor to lead the Indian team. He has the vote of support among his teammates too. Moreover, he can lead the team off the field too.

On a day when India needed to give their best performance on the field, Manpreet took the opportunity to show his mettle. He was brilliant throughout the match. When India was struggling to get going in the first half, Manpreet kept inspiring his players not to lose hope.

He came down to defend when the team were in trouble. He moved up to make his contribution when India were attacking. It was Manpreet who earned India’s first penalty corner. His 40 yard run down the line was blocked by Belgian defence.

Manpreet quickly recovered the ball and forced the defender to commit a mistake. He ran up and down constantly to ease pressure from his teammates. Despite doing so much, there not even a single moment when he looked tired. He pulled off a performance which is expected from a captain.
