Varun Kumar is one of the seven youngsters who have the taste of a Hockey World Cup. He was a part of the Junior team which won the World Cup in Lucknow two years ago. It is because of his brilliant skills that Harendra Singh, who coached him during the Junior World Cup, called him in the senior team.

Varun rose to fame after showing his brilliant skills for Punjab Warriors in the Hockey India League. During his team, he scored a lot of goals from Penalty Corners. He has power and most of his shots were concentrated on the left. So, when India got the first penalty corner, it was none other than Varun who took the role of a drag flicker.

His first shot was blocked but it was enough to earn his a second penalty corner. Now, Varun tried to score from his favourite spot and it nearly went in goal before being blocked by a Belgian defender. India earned a penalty which was converted by Harmanpreet.

He has a good peripheral vision to see where his teammates are. Just before the end of third quarter, he lofted a ball to Lalit Upadhyay, which the latter missed badly. He also marked his appearance in defensive line with good tackles and interception.

Time is with him and he has a golden chance to be one of the stars of the tournament.
