Railways, Haryana, Jharkhand and Punjab reach women's national hockey semis

Bhopal, March 20 (IANS): Railways, Haryana, Jharkhand and Punjab qualified for the Women’s National Hockey Championship (Division A) semifinals at the Aish Bagh and M.D.C. Stadium here Thursday.

Haryana will now meet Jharkhand in the first semifinal while Punjab will take on Railways in the other Saturday.

In Pool B, Railways defeated Bihar with a massive goal difference of 24-0 which included 20 field goals and four penalty corner conversions. Rani emerged as the highest scorer with five goals in the 5th, 8th, 34th, 46th and 62nd minutes. By halftime, Railways had consolidated an 11-0 lead and continued their dominance in the second half as well.

Poonam Rani was the second highest scorer with four goals (25th, 35th, 53rd, 55th minutes). Vandana Kataria, Soundriya Y. and Joydeep Kaur scored three goals each.

Haryana continued ruling Pool A by beating Chattisgarh 12-0. Before going into the break, Haryana had struck six goals with the other six coming in the second half.

In another Pool A match, Madhya Pradesh defeated Odisha by 4-1 while in Pool C, Jharkhand had a comfortable 8-1 win over Mumbai with all goals coming as field goals.

In another Pool C match, Bhopal edged past Sports Authority Of India 3-1 (SA) in a stiff competition.

Later in Pool D, Karnataka beat Kerala 5-2.

Pool A: Haryana 13 beat Chhattisgarh 0; Madhya Pradesh 4 beat Odisha 1

Pool C: Jharkhand 8 beat Mumbai 1; Bhopal 3 beat SAI 1

Pool D: Karnataka 5 beat Kerala 2
