Women's Hockey World Cup Day 1

Women’s World Cup in Argentina has commenced and first day games have concluded with home team Argentina getting a big 5-2 win over South Africa. Luciana Aymar scored a hat-trick with other two goals coming from Noel Barrionuevo – who top scored at the recent Champions Trophy tournament in Nottingham, England – netted the first goal of the game, sending a penalty corner effort into the goal in the 16th minute. However, Pietee Coetzee marked her return to World Level events with a penalty corner of her own in the 22nd minute. Then Luciana Aymer scored two field goals and one from penalty corner to give them a victory.

While in the inaugural match played today in Group B two Asian powerhouses Korea and China met

England vs Spain

each other with Korea winning the match 2-1 with goals from Young Ran Kim and Park Mi Hyun. China took the lead in early 11th minute through  ZHAO Yudiao but Korea fought back and leveled the scoreline in the 23rd minute through Young Ran Kim by a field goal. Then Park Mi Hyun scored the winning goal though a brilliant solo effort. This was a shock for Olympic silver medal winner China.

In the third match of the day, Champions Trophy bronze medalist England beat Spain 3-2 and thus continued their fine form. Spain started the early proceedings when Gloria Comerma, who fired in a powerful penalty corner strike which stunned England in the fourth minute of the match. England responded soon and brought the game level through Alex Danson who played her her 100 game. England got the lead when Crista Cullen scored through a penalty corner. Spain leveled back through Carlota Petchame’s field goal. However, England regained the advantage on the stroke of half time thanks to a field goal from Susie Gilbert.

With the results of Group B, Argentina have topped it due to superior goal difference, with England at the second spot.

Tomorrow Group A will start its games with India, Netherlands, Germany, NZ, Japan and Australia playing their matches.
