India and Japan had earlier advanced to the Super 4s as the top two sides from Pool B, while China and South Korea made it past the preliminaries from Pool A.

All four teams play each other in a round-robin format in the Super 4s stage. The two teams finishing on top of the Super 4s pool will face each other in the gold medal match of the women's hockey Asia Cup, with the winner earning a spot in the 2026 FIH Women's World Cup.

India took on South Korea in the Super 4s opener of the women's hockey Asia Cup in Hangzhou. Harendra Singh's team got off to an attacking start, earning a penalty corner as early as the second minute.

Vaishnavi Phalke opened the scoring for the Indians off the penalty corner rebound. The Indians kept up the pressure on the Korean defence with some speedy runs and quick short passes.

In search of an equaliser, the Koreans were repeatedly denied entry into the attacking third, even as the Indians held their structure admirably. The Women in Blue went into the long breather with just a lone goal to show for their efforts, but doubled their lead early in the second half.

Sangita Kumari made the most of an assist from Rutuja Pisal before Kim Yujin pulled one back for Korea immediately after.

Lalremsiami restored India's two-goal lead midway through the third quarter, even as the Indian deep defence kept the Korean strikers at bay.

Kim Yujin kept Korea in the hunt by scoring a second goal off a penalty corner in the 53rd minute.

The Indians, however, did well to deny the Koreans possession without being bogged down in defence. Their persistence was rewarded when Rutuja Pisal tapped a rebound off Udita's penalty corner slap shot into the back of the net in the 59th minute, thus sealing the deal for the Salima Tete-led side.

In the second Super 4s contest of the day, Japan performed admirably, trailing China by a single goal at half-time and not allowing their powerful opponents to run away with the game.

However, a second Chinese goal off a penalty corner in the third quarter tilted the scales firmly in favour of the home side, who prevailed 2-0.

Both the winning teams, India and China, face off in the second of their Super 4s matches of the women's hockey Asia Cup on Thursday in what is certain to be a firecracker of a contest.

Although there is nothing to separate India and China in terms of points and goal difference, the Indians are on top of the pool by virtue of having scored more goals.
