That will be all from this game. It never took off but it was a fun series no less. Even more fun having you with us here on Sportskeeda as we thank you for being a patient audience today. Do stay tuned to all the other cricketing news and action from around the globe on this very platform. Until next time, this is the duo of Karthik Raj and Sooryanarayanan Sesha taking your leave. Thank you so much for joining us - have a great week ahead. Buh-bye and take care!
Both captains will share the trophy. There was just one complete game this series with England smashing records aplenty in that contest. South Africa took the honors in a rain-affected game in Cardiff and both teams will take their positives out of this rubber as they build towards the T20 World Cup. A solid break now for the Proteas and a deserved one after two high-intensity tours of Australia and England. As for the hosts, they may have completed their home summer but a team minus a number of A-listers will jet off to Ireland for a three-match T20I series beginning later this week. What an opportunity for young Jacob Bethell as he gets to lead England for the first time on that tour!
Harry Brook (England Captain): (About the wash-out) It's a shame that the weather has done it again. We only played one proper T20 game but the way that we played the other night was phenomenal. To do that against a very strong side gives us lots of confidence. (Whether he believed Salt could produce what he did at Manchester) Definitely, believed as I know what he can do. (Scoring 300) The batting line-up that we've got, we could do that three or four times. (Leading the team) Good fun. First summer as captain. It's different but we've got a good group. (Whether he will be taking a break) Got about a month now. I'll go on holiday, ahead of New Zealand and the Ashes.
Aiden Markram (South Africa captain): Tough one. Quick game the first time around, the second game we were completely outplayed. We had a chance to rectify it today but a shame there was no game. It was quite disappointing (in Manchester). From a planning point of view, you want to be adaptable. Lots of lessons from Australia to this tour as well from the T20 squad. We're tracking towards that World Cup and hopefully we can keep improving. We have conversations with the group - never taking playing for the country for granted and things like that. We have to go back to our skillsets and improve for sure. It's about improving and building towards that World Cup. You want to win - today was an exciting opportunity, it was a must-win game. We were excited about that opportunity but there's only so much you can do. Two-three weeks off now which is welcome. That tour (of Pakistan) will bring unique sets of challenges and the players will be up for that.
Phil Salt (Player of the Series): We had to go from ball one at Cardiff. Love opening the batting with Jos (Buttler) now. We know each other well. Nice to go out there with him. Ireland are a good side and they have got good results at home, so we've got a job on our hand.
Phil Salt has been named as the 'Player of the Series'.
Stick around for the post-series presentation...
4:20 PM local time (8:50 PM IST): It's official - the match has been abandoned! The series is drawn 1-1! We can't deny it - this was almost inevitably on the cards given the forecast and alas, after what has been such an engrossing series and particularly on the back of what happened in Manchester a couple of days ago, it ends as a damp squib. This series surely deserved a better end but alas, there won't be a winner with the spoils shared.
4:04 PM local time (8:34 PM IST): The rain has intensified further. Could get an official update anytime soon now the way this is going...
In case you're wondering, we're hearing that 5:46 PM local time (10:16 PM IST) is the latest the game can start for a five-over contest.
Mike: "What do you reckon? Will Root break Tendulkar's record?" Let's just put it this way Mike - if Root doesn't, I don't think anyone else will! Not least with the advent of the T20 era and a direct impact on the volume of Test cricket!
It's a good time to revisit the Manchester Mayhem - here's a look at some of the records that England smashed en route to a barnstorming 304/2 with the bat on Friday!👇
3:30 PM local time (8 PM IST): Same story - nothing has changed. We've officially begun to lose overs now!
Jay: "From England's standpoint, Jacob Bethell's rise has been pleasing" He's a special talent, isn't he? Rated very highly by none other than Joe Root himself and that tells you all you need to know
Ajay: "As an Indian fan, Siraj taking that last wicket at The Oval is my favorite moment!" That sure was something, wasn't it? A pulsating series fittingly ending 2-2.
3:06 local time (7:36 PM IST): It continues to rain at Trent Bridge. Nothing new to report. But we can confirm that we will start losing overs at 3:30 PM local time. Not long from now then...
Marc: "My favorite moment of the summer has to be Root going past Ponting and Kallis!" Just behind Sachin Tendulkar now on the Test run-tally. A big Ashes series beckons the great man in a couple of months' time. That moment with Ponting calling it on air was quite special!
2:39 PM local time (7:09 PM IST): The covers are still very much in place. The entire square has been covered. We should have been ten minutes into the contest already and while we aren't quite into reduced overs territory yet, we can't help but feel that we will see some overs reduced.
Asifkhan: "England will make 250 first innings total" Quite clearly, there's a six-fest on demand today!
Agamjpt: "Who will be the highest scorer of this series?" At the moment, Phil Salt leads the charts and is 33 runs clear of Jos Buttler. Unless the weather clears up significantly, there's nothing much to suggest that this will change
