Comilla Victorians are the champions of the Bangladesh Premier League 2022 and they win this competition for the third time.

It was a match worthy of a final! The game ebbed and flowed right from the start to the end and it could only be decided off the last ball of the 40th over! In the end, is was the Comilla Victorians who held their nerves and managed to pull off an incredible and memorable victory!

Winning the toss and batting first, Comilla got off to the best possible start with Sunil Narine smashing the Fortune Barishal bowling to all parts of the ground, sparing neither pace, nor spin! His whirlwind half-century came up inside the power play and set his team on course for huge total. His knock sparkled with 5 fours and 5 sixes, tearing the opposition bowling apart!

Then came the delivery from Mehedi Hasan Rana that got him out, caught at long-on, after which, the innings took an opposite turn, as the Barishal bowling took control and was all over Comilla, taking the next 4 wickets in real quick time and tightening the screws on the runs. Both Faf du Plessis and Imrul Kayes failed to get going today and that changed the complexion of the innings completely.

Moeen Ali was joined by Abu Hider Rony at a critical time for Comilla Victorians, when they played out their initial few overs together, by taking mostly singles and ensuring that another wicket did not fall. Slowly but surely, the partnership gained momentum and the runs came much quicker, much to the surprise of Fortune Barishal. Suddenly, with only a few balls remaining in the 1st innings, the pair put up a solid 50-run stand to take their team to some sort of safety.

Both the batters fell in the end, but their effort was enough to ensure that Comilla Victorians posted a competitive 151 runs on the board, to give their bowlers, more that something to bowl to.

With the ball, all the Barishal bowlers were good, with Mujeeb Ur Rahman and Shafiqul Islam, being the picks. Mujeeb came back superbly after going for plenty in his first over and Shafiqul bowled an excellent last over to derail the momentum Comilla had built up until then. The rest of the bowlers were also smart in executing their plans and every bowler used got at least one wicket to show for his effort.

Shakib Al Hasan's captaincy today for Fortune Barishal was highly proactive as he rang in the changes at the right time, going for the wickets on all counts.

The 2nd innings began decently for Comilla, as the dangerous Munim Shahriar was dismissed without scoring in the 2nd over itself. That brought out Shykat Ali, the only change in the match, who took the game by the scruff of the neck, and with Chris Gayle's experience by his side, took the bowling on right from the word go, and wreaked havoc on Comilla! He destroyed overs of quality bowlers like Mustafizur Rahman and Moeen Ali, to tell everyone that he really belonged at this stage! His batting gave Chris Gayle much needed time at the other end to pace his innings well and by the time Shykat got out, Fortune Barishal were in pole position to win the match.

Chris Gayle continued in his way to get as many more as he could, and even when he got out, his team looked pretty assured of winning. Shakib and Nurul Hasan then strung together a small partnership to further add to Comilla's frustration, before the skipper was out via a neat diving catch by Mustafizur and the wicket-keeper batter was run out, thanks to an outstanding direct hit from point. It was at that stage that Comilla started to believe that the game was not over for them.

Najmul Hossain Shanto's six off Shohidul Islam almost put to bed, any butterflies in the stomach for Fortune Barishal, but after that, in the next over, Sunil Narine managed to dismiss Dwayne Bravo cheaply and put the game wide open. When Shanto got out to Mustafizur in the second-last over, things got even more interesting, with Towhid Hridoy having to do the crucial remaining work, with Mujeeb. It was a fantastic over though from Mustafizur Rahman as his bowling gave Shohidul Islam 10 runs to defend off the last over.

And what a last over it was! With Moeen Ali unavailable to bowl, Shohidul stepped up to the cause and did not give away even a single boundary in the over. But there was drama right till the last ball, as every delivery kept both sides in the hunt. There were 3 runs to get off the last ball with Towhid on strike, but Shohidul held his nerve to bowl a good delivery on off-stump that Towhid could not get past the fielder at mid-off, and it was befittingly Imrul Kayes who fielded it, put in the throw to the wicket-keeper Liton Das, and got Mujeeb run out, helping his team win the final by 1 run!

The bowling was horrible at the beginning but spectacular in the end, with Mustafizur Rahman, Moeen Ali and Shohidul Islam, all coming back to bowl excellent overs towards the end. Tanvir Islam and Sunil Narine though, were brilliant right through their four overs, giving away a few in the context of the match, and taking two wickets apiece.

Sunil Narine was rightly adjudged the player of the match for his all-round performance, while Shakib Al Hasan, for his all-round efforts right through the tournament, was deservingly, the player of the tournament.

It was an honour to be able to bring to you, such an enthralling and nail-biting final, worthy of the name, between the top two sides of the competition! In the end, Comilla Victorians were crowned champions of the Bangladesh Premier League 2022, by the barest of margins! From the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur, Dhaka, that is all that we have for you, but stay tuned to Sportskeeda for many more matches of this great game called cricket! For now, it is the pair of Karthik and Bidipto, saying good bye to you!

Comilla Victorians captain, Imrul Kayes: It was an incredible match and I did not expect to win, but it's all thanks to god! We made a lot of mistakes with the bat after Sunil got out, but then we managed to claw our way back in the match with Moeen and Abu Hider. With the ball, we were really good at the death. Sunil and Faf have been very good with their inputs. Right through, we were good with the ball and now we can relax.

Player of the Tournament, and Fortune Barishal captain, Shakib Al Hasan (284 runs and 16 wickets): Very good game of cricket, both teams did make a lot of mistakes but well done to Comilla. Shykat played a great innings, given the importance of the match. I thought we came back really well after Sunil's onslaught. Comilla held their nerves, their bowlers were very good, we can though, take heart from this performance and hope to come back stronger next season.

Sunil Narine has been named as the 'Player of the Match

"I think this (achievement) is the most important. At the start of the tournament, this is where you want to end up. Credit goes to all the boys. The wicket assisted a bit, and the pressure of the game helped a bit. Good effort from the guys, they deserve it. It was too close for comfort, but the spectators got what they wanted and in the end cricket is the winner. Looking forward to coming back next time."
Time for the Post-match/Tournament presentation ceremony!
