Commentary

KKR win by 9 wickets with 60 balls to spare

The men from Bengaluru have been dusted away. A perfect game played with absolute laser precision. KKR were on the money from the beginning and once they managed to claw their nails into the RCB outfit, they never really allowed them to breathe easy.

Starting from the dismissal of Virat Kohli, it all followed a plan, that was devised by the mastery of Eoin Morgan and coach Brendon McCullum. A target of 93 was never going to pose any problem to the stacked batting lineup of KKR.

Shubman Gill and debutant Venkatesh Iyer just proved it to tee. Both openers were severe on the poor RCB bowlers, crunching, driving, and pulling them all around the park, whenever they felt like doing so. Gill, coming back after injury showed that he never really left and carried from where he left in the first phase of the tournament.

However, it was Iyer who impressed everyone with his audacious stroke-making. Granted the total was not imposing but the pedigree of the shots was something that warrants a mention. Kyle Jamieson and Mohammed Siraj looked jaded and rusty after coming back off a season playing red-ball cricket.

Might need a couple of games to get going. Harshal Patel, the current purple cap winner managed to cause some nervous moments before Chahal got the solitary wicket of Gill.

In the end, Iyer rightfully hit the winning shot and carried his team to the victory shores, giving a massive fillip to the team's net run rate. KKR need to every single game to make it to the knockouts and by the looks of it, they couldn't have started any better.

Virat Kohli (Losing Captain): I think it was important to get a good partnership on this surface. We didn't think the dew would come so early. 42/2 odd in five overs, then losing five wickets within 20 runs. Bit of a collapse from there for us. Bit of a wake-up call, might as well have it now. You are expected to turn up and adjust to the format. We have never found any trouble in doing it, But sometimes it can happen. You have to stay with the eight ball because the other teams will be all over you otherwise. He (Varun Chakaravarthy) looked pretty good, I was talking in the dugout. He will be a key factor, playing for India. We need to see performances like this from the youngsters. He is someone that will play a big role for India in the future. We have five wins from eight games. We expect a loss here and there in the tournament. You need to take a loss in your stride as well. We just need to be professional and stick to our strengths. We have confidence in the squad that we will be able to pull things back.

Shubhman Gill: We were determined to make a comeback. We have made a bold statement and hopefully, we can qualify for the knockouts. We are happy that we were able to execute our plans. He (Iyer) was playing well in the practice matches as well. It felt really good. I was gutted by the way I got out. Hopefully, I will complete the half-century next time. After the powerplay overs, it was good to see Varun and Sunil coming nicely. It (pitch) was slow initially. It was much better in the second innings.

Eoin Morgan (Winning Captain): It is very rare that you perform as today. The timing is great as well. Resumption has excited us all. You need to prove yourself as a team and today I think we did exactly that. (On the toss decision) Yeah, I think it was a 50-50 decision. Didn't think the pitch would change much, I think the bowlers had an excellent day. Collectively, we took the important wickets, AB, Virat, and Maxi, we got on top of them. Playing under Baz and me should not make one fearful. Today is the perfect start which we didn't have in India. It makes us a dangerous side. The heat doesn't like me (smiles)

Varun Chakravarthy (Player of the Match): I try to access the pitch first. It was flat, Would like to give credit to bowlers who bowled in the powerplay. I like to set it up for the next bowler coming into the attack. There was not much spin so I had to keep it on the stumps. (On the hattrick appeal) I thought it was OUT but I just saw the footage, it was an inside edge. (On India call-up) It has definitely made me feel better. I have got a sense of acceptance. I started at the age of 26 so never knew if I could make it big. It gives me a sense of acceptance.
