Well, then. CSK have breached the fortress and secured a valuable couple of points to cement their place in the top three. On the other hand, Mumbai Indians will be really disappointed with the loss at home. They have 4 losses from 6 games and are at the 8th spot now. They have made comebacks from similar positions, but it's not going to be easy to do it time and again.

Matheesha Pathirana (Player of the Match): When we were bowling in the powerplay, I was a bit nervous. Dhoni bhai came and told me to keep it calm. I don't think about the result, I think only about execution. I will get my results if I execute well. Sometimes I have to change it (bowling yorkers). I've done it in the past. I struggled with a niggle for for the past two weeks. The support staff, coaching staff and seniors have all supported me through this period.

Ruturaj Gaikwad (Chennai Super Kings captain): (What made you happy?) Our young wicket-keeper scoring three sixes. At the end, that was the difference. To start off, on this sort of wicket, you need 10-15 runs extra. We were initially looking at 210-215, but they bowled really well. Still it a was a plus getting to nearly 210. For the bowling, we were spot on. They played some extraordinary shots. In the powerplay, 6 overs 60, would have taken it any day. In these kind of venues, both skills, whether it is bowling or batting, you need to be on the mark. In the bowling department, our Malinga (Matheesha Pathirana) bowled really well. Picked up wickets and nailed those yorkers. Tushar and Shardul also bowled really well. Just keep it simple, encourage everyone to be in good headspace, relax for the next 2-3 days before we go on. Jinks (Ajinkya Rahane) was carrying a bit of a niggle. So we thought it was better for him to open, could get some quick runs in the powerplay. I'm fine batting anywhere in the order.

Shardul Thakur (Chennai Super Kings): Pretty happy. It's never easy playing against MI, especially at Wankhede. This game is known for producing quality cricket and that's what we saw today. At the end of the day, we held our nerves better and won the game. [Bowling plans] We spoke about keeping it simple. We should have fielders where we're going to bowl and not be smart to outplay the batter. I think whenever the pitch is repeated in Wankhede, the slower ones work a lot better. Pathirana was absolutely magical this evening. The way he bowled his yorkers was amazing to see. There wasn't much dew on the ground. In the middle when Rohit was going strong, it felt like the game was going away from us a little. When I came on, the idea was to keep the longer boundary in play and keeping him quite to try and get some momentum in the game.

Hardik Pandya (Mumbai Indians captain): [Target] It was gettable but I think they bowled really well. Pathirana was the difference. They used their plans with the longer boundary well. There's a man behind the stumps who was telling them what's working. And they also realized that the ball was holding up and it worked in their favour. We were going quite well but the couple of wickets we lost obviously changed the game. [Bowling with pacers in the middle] It was just about what was best at that point of time. In hindsight, we can say we should have used a spinner but in the longer term, I like to stick to percentage cricket. I think it was a lot more difficult for him (Dube) with the seamers than it would have been with the spinners. We're on the road for the next four games. It's about keeping the intensity high and playing good cricket.

Mumbai Indians would feel like they have lost a game that they should have won. And the fact that this has happened at the Wankhede will hurt them much more. The pitch wasn't as helpful for the batters in the second innings, as has been the case historically, but the batters just could get going in the middle-overs. The dew was also not prominent, which has certainly helped the CSK bowlers.

206 has more or less been a par total on this track. And Mumbai Indians seemed well on course to repeat their dominating performance from the last game. But the first set back came in the eighth over when Pathirana dismissed a set Ishan Kishan and a dangerous Suryakumar Yadav in the space of three balls.

Rohit Sharma was a standout in the MI innings. He took the attack on right from the outset and continued playing his shots. The way he maneuvered the field and played with the bowlers' minds were quite a sight. Tilak Varma also looked promising during the time he was out in the middle. The do put on 60 runs off just 32 balls before Pathirana came back once again to dismiss Tilak.

Once Tilak Varma walked back in the 14th over, the real struggle for MI began. 77 runs were needed of 6 overs at that stage, which was very much gettable with the likes of Hardik Pandya, Tim David, Romario Shepherd and Mohammad Nabi to follow. However, Shardul Thakur and Tushar Deshpande combined to give away just five runs in the next two overs. The pressure was right up there when they approached the death overs against Mustafizur Rahman and Matheesha Pathirana.

As Hardik Pandya and Tim David succumbed to the pressure, Rohit Sharma was starved off the strike at one end. The squeeze was on and CSK kept chipping away with the wickets. Before they knew, the required rate had got out of hand. It was a fine century from Rohit Sharma, but as his muted celebrations showed, this loss could really come back and hurt Mumbai Indians.

Matheesha Pathirana was the pick of the bowlers for CSK, which should be no surprise. They used him in a similar way to how Bumrah is used by MI. It was felt that he could have been brought in a couple of overs earlier for his second spell to break the game open, but it worked out well in the end of CSK. The medium-pacers came well into the game in the middle overs and it seemed like the pitch was gripping just a touch. Ruturaj Gaikwad will certainly be happy with his team's performance and an away victory tonight.
