Irrespective of the formats and irrespective of the venues, Australia under Pat Cummins is phenomenal to watch and what's more impressive is their consistency to win matches. New Zealand is always a tough place for any visiting team and having not played here for more than eight years, the Aussies won the first Test quite convincingly.
The Blackcaps looked completely down when Green and Hazlewood frustrated them on Day 2's first session and it all reflected in their batting performance. Lyon proved lethal and unstoppable in both innings and plenty of work needs to be done on the batting front, if they are to match this relentless Aussie outfit. They have a few days time to regroup and recover before they step into the field at Christchurch, and let's hope they produce their goods to level the series. Cameron Green is named the Player of the Match
Well, Cameron Green with the bat and Nathan Lyon with the ball made the big difference for the Aussies. When batting became too difficult on the first day, Green played a splendid knock to score a century and moreover, his last wicket stand with Hazlewood made a big difference in this contest. The Kiwis left frustrated with the partnership and to make things bad to worse, they got off to a horrendous start, losing five wickets for just 29 runs
The lower order batters managed to do a rescue act but the hosts found themselves a long way behind at the end of their first innings. Then, Phillips' heroics with the ball gave them a glimmer of hope but once again, the top-order can't apply themselves with the bat and fell prey to the red-hot Nathan Lyon. The partnership between Ravindra and Mitchell excited the fans to turn up in good numbers on Sunday but Lyon wreaked havoc and shattered all the hopes inside the first hour
Australia won by 172 runs
It was a Nathan Lyon show at Basin Reserve and the Kiwis had no answers to counter the offie and capitulated easily inside the first session. He became a real menace when Cummins reintroduced him at a different end and got the ball to turn big, picking up three wickets in 10 deliveries.
Ravindra was the first to go and Blundell's wicket was a carbon copy of his dismissal in the first innings before Phillips played completely at the wrong line to depart cheaply.
When Kuggeleijn found answers to negotiate Lyon, Cummins brought Cam Green and he removed him with a surprise hard length delivery that got big on him. Henry's stay was short lived and Southee's aggression lasted only for a few minutes as he became Lyon's sixth scalp. Mitchell watched his partners perish one after the other and eventually, he did the inevitable by trying to take on Hazlewood but the ball went straight up for the bowler to take an easy follow through
Hazlewood seals the deal and Australia go 1-0 up in the series. They emerge victorious in a convincing fashion. Hugs and handshakes all around as the Aussies head back to dugout with a smile, while the Kiwis didn't live up to the expectation with the bat again and lost by a big margin
