9:23 PM local time and IST: With this result, South Africa Women join Australia Women in the semi-finals! New Zealand Women move to 4 points, level with India Women, who will be in action tomorrow in Indore against England Women. The first ball will be bowled at 3:00 PM IST. Do join us for this important match. For now, this is Darpan and Bidipto taking your leave. Keep following Sportskeeda!
Sana Fatima (Pakistan Women captain): "We got a good start early on in the power play, then we lost our wickets, but still, a 180-score would have helped. We have a good bowling attack, so, would have taken that score. Anyway, not to be. Our bowling unit is happy with how things have gone. But the batting needs to improve. There are two matches left, so, we will look to get better at that. When we came here, we were told that the wickets will favour spin. But when I bowled in practice, I found out that there is a lot in there for the seamers! It has been a tough campaign so far, but I've enjoyed my captaincy. Hope to finish off the tournament with good results."
Sophie Devine (New Zealand captain): "We had a little bit of hope seeing what happened in the SA-SL game. We were in a good position and were just hoping that we will have some action. It is a disappointment. Hopefully, in the future editions we will play the games early in the morning. We have seen that the rain usually comes down in the afternoon. It's a shame. We were really up and about thi game. We just wanted to play cricket. We know that the situation is clear for us — win both matches. We will fly to India now. We have a few days now until our next game against India. We know they are huge favourites at home. We did well against them last year (T20 World Cup), so we will look to build on that."
9:09 PM local time and IST: It is time now to hear from the captains of the respective teams.
9:05 PM: The match has been called off. No result due to rain.
Pakistan Women scored 92/5 in 25 overs.
Aliya Riaz 28* (52) | Muneeba Ali 22 (26) Lea Tahuhu - 2/20 (6) | Eden Carson - 1/7 (4)
The New Zealand bowlers struggled to contain the swing early on in the innings and they gave away a few runs as the Pakistani opening pair reached the 30 run mark. However once Leah Tahuhu came into the attack, she managed to get Omaima Sohail leg before wicket. Once she opened the gates, Muneeba Ali was dismissed by Kerr courtesy an outstanding grab from Suzie Bates. Pakistan could only get 39 runs from the powerplay for the loss of a couple of wickets.
Lea Tahuhu continued to bowl with good pace and she got rid of the experienced Sidra Ameen who tried to flash hard outside off stump courtesy another sublime grab by Carson. Aliya Riaz and Natalia Pervaiz tried to stitch together a stand but it was broken post the rain interruption by Carson who dismissed Pervaiz. The latter played a pathetic shot to open the gates for NZ again and Amelia Kerr came in from the other end to dismiss the Pakistani skipper Fatima Sana. Pakistan had once again lost half their side for less than 90 runs.
And sadly after that, even with some hope in the middle of a 36-overs-a-side contest, the match never restarted! Rain just kept coming and coming and coming!
This time, the ground staff could not get the chance to be the heroes. The cut-off time was set to 9:41 PM local time and IST, but the rain did not allow the ground staff any chance of doing anything about it.
Eventually, the inevitable happened. Both teams shared a point and we ended up with the fourth no-result of the World Cup, right here, at the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo.
Ramesh: "I think the match between India and New Zealand will decide the fate of one of these teams, as regards making it to the semis." That is a game to look forward to! One of the marquee matches of this tournament. And yes Ramesh, we get you here. It may well come down to that, with Australia, South Africa and England in good positions already.
8:55 PM: Not much has changed since our last update. Every inch of the field is covered under blue tarpaulin as it continues to pour down in Colombo. Izzy Gaze and Georgia Plimmer have come downstairs to walk around in the rain. After all, you have to pass the time somehow.
Vinod Kokal: "Has the match been cancelled?" No Vinod. The cut-off time for a 20-over game is 9:41 PM, as we have mentioned. So, it hasn't been cancelled. There is still time and hope for a game.
Abhi: "It is definitely going to be another washout." To be honest with you Abhi, we thought the same at this time yesterday! The cut-off time was 9:10 PM last evening. Today, it is 9:41 PM. So, you never know! There's still time.
aasfrt: "Every team is trying its best just to become runners-up, because beating the Aussies in the finals is like breaking stone with the help of your hands. ." Yes the Aussies have made it to the semi-finals. But they are yet to make the final. And so, they are yet to win this World Cup. We'll keep saying, it's never over till it's over.
Jay: "I think rain is following New Zealand. Saying it's in Sri Lanka but earlier NZ-W's 1st abandoned game was in SL against SL. Seems like another such result coming our way here." And NZ are in contention for a semi-final spot, like India, which makes these no-results, or rain-affected matches, even more tight for them.
Manish: "Tomorrow, India will bat well. I am pretty sure that India will out-bat England and eventually, win the match to collect two points." First things first Manish, we love your optimism! And so, you should also tell us who you expect to score more runs for India tomorrow!
8:15 PM: The picture continues to get grimmer. The only saving grace is that we have until 9:41 PM before the game is called off. So, we hope that much like yesterday, we have some action, even if it is late in the evening. Till then, in case you missed it, this is the duo of Darpan Tikiya and Bidipto Datta keeping you company.
8:08 PM: Interestingly, Colombo is not the only venue in this World Cup effected by rain today. There were some surprise showers in Indore too which eventually led to the cancellation of India's practice session today. Remember, they face-off against the four time champions England tomorrow. Rohan: "In the meantime, will want to say that tomorrow, India need to play 6 frontline bowlers. There should be no two ways about it." Now this is a talking point for sure Rohan and you have hit the nail on the head! So friends, as we wait for the action to resume today, what's your take on tomorrow's match and in particular, India's team? Do let us know.
8:00 PM local time and IST: The rain has intensified. It is no longer drizzling, like it was five to seven minutes back, it is coming down pretty steadily now. The scene is definitely not beautiful, is what we can say for now.
7:50 PM local time and IST: The other big reason friends, why the umpires have decided to halt play, along with the rain that is there of course, is lightning strikes. Player safety is paramount, so, it is the right call to stay indoors when there is thunder and lightning. The cut-off time is 9:41 PM local time, as just informed by Ian Bishop on air.
7:43 PM local time and IST: Scratch the previous update friends! The rain is back. The covers are coming on again. The frustration for the players, the crowd and everyone following, simply continues! And, we must spare a thought for each and every member of the Premadasa ground staff. They are working non-stop, tirelessly, for all of us!
7:35 PM local time and IST: Right friends, we will now have a 36-overs-a-side contest! It will be a 10-minute break between innings. There will be the restart at 7:52 PM local time and IST. And of course, the target will be revised as per the DLS method.
