Commentary

That was some performance from the hosts which has helped them storm their way back into the tournament. It certainly opens up things for all the teams in this group but for New Zealand, it has been two back-to-back hammerings. They will require some inspiration before they set off for the next match. The T20 World Cup continues with a double header Tuesday. So until then, it's tata from me (Arya Sekhar Chakraborty) and my fellow commentator and good mate Pragadeesh.

Sune Luus (South Africa skipper): Yeah first of thanks to the Paarl crowd. One of the biggest crowds we ever had which makes the victory more special. I think after our last game, we certainly wanted to keep that intent and keep the run rate going. This is what we tried to do today and managed to get a competitive score in the end. The spinners did a brilliant job today but the likes of Aya (Ayabonga Khaka) and Shabi (Shabnim Ismail) supported them very well. Yes, she did a brilliant job. It's good to see Jafta in form. What a legend she is (speaking on Chloe Tryon). She, unfortunately, missed out Friday evening but made most of it today.

Sophie Devine (New Zealand skipper): I am not too sure about to be honest. Credit to South Africa for completely outplaying us. It is embarrassing. Back-to-back thrashings, simply not good enough at international cricket. Look I thought, it was a competitive score but we should have chased this down. We have to look at the mirrors and have some harsh discussions. Let your emotions out to be honest (on how she will approach things after returning to the dressing room). We have got a couple of days before the next match, we have to move on. Tomorrow will be a very important day for us, we have to move away from cricket. Sports is bloody hard at times but we have to bounce back. We have to find some positives. The young guns has been brilliant. To bowl some tough overs from the youngster was great (speaking on Eden Carson).

Chloe Tryon (Player of the Match): It was special. After the first game we knew what we had in store. We had to go back to the basics and everything went well today. Yeah, I think so. We wanted this win really badly. You can see the smiles after getting the job done. I think we were 15-20 short but the bowlers did the job. I am loving my bowling, it’s nice to challenge myself. I am happy that we won today.

This was a capitulation of the highest order as New Zealand was absolutely hammered by South Africa, winning the game by 65 runs. New Zealand was never in the run-chase and was eventually bowled out for just 67 in the 19th over. They kept losing wickets at regular intervals and could never manage any sort of flow to their innings. This heavy defeat all but ends the hopes of New Zealand in this T20 World Cup. Theoretically, they still stand a chance but in all likelihood, this is the end of their competition.

Nonkululeko Mlaba started the charge with a couple of quick wickets which included the openers Bezuidenhout and Suzie Bates. Two quick wickets put them on the backfoot straightaway and then the pacers did their job. Marizanne Kapp and Ayabonga Khaka joined in the act, as New Zealand was reduced to 18/4. Sophie Devine demoted herself down the order to make the batting deep but that backfired in the end.

South Africa was quite exceptional in the field and didn’t really allow New Zealand to find the easy singles and doubles. Chloe Tryon was handed the ball by Sune Luus and she didn’t disappoint. She prized out Maddy Green but the wicket of Sophie Devine put the final nails in the coffin as far as New Zealand was concerned. They just couldn’t quite get going and eventually succumbed to a 65-run defeat. This is also their lowest score in a T20 World Cup.

Earlier in the day, it was Sune Luus who won the toss and opted to bat and posted a competitive score of 131 in their allotted 20 overs. It should have been a close run chasse given New Zealand’s depth in the batting line-up but alas it never happened. Chloe Tryon scored a fluent 40 off 34 deliveries while Nadine de Klerk remained unbeaten on 27 off 25 deliveries to take South Africa to 132 which proved to be more than enough in the end.
