Rovman Powell (captain, West Indies): Always good to take a 1-0 lead. We bowled well in the powerplay, let them off later on but then good from the boys with the bat in hand. The boys look rusty and it is unacceptable to be like that at this level. The next World Cup is too far to make it our primary objective, it is an opportunity to try new guys. We need to take one game at a time and need to see what happens
Aiden Markram (captain, South Africa): I think it was the runs. We needed 10-15 runs more. It was just a bit tacky upfront and made it a bit tough to score as the game went on. A lot of credit must go to Stubbs and Kruger. He is really young, he has got a strong hunger and drive. It is a great sign for us as a team
Nicholas Pooran is the Player of the Match. This is what he has to say: We knew at the 10-over mark the pitch was good for batting. Shai and Alick did a good job at the top. The first 10 overs in the first innings were difficult, Kruger and Stubbs played well and that is when we knew we had to back our strengths
West Indies beat South Africa by 7 wickets and lead the 3 match T20I series 1-0
West Indies: 176/3 after 17.5 overs Nicholas Pooran: 65(26b) | Shai Hope: 51(36b) Ottneil Baartman: 2/30 (4 overs) | Kwena Maphaka 1/25 (3.5 overs)
West Indies looked in some hurry chasing this total down. A perfect start, a well paced middle overs ensured there were no hiccups throughout the chase.
West Indies met this chase with bang. After a sedate first over, they managed to shift gears nonchalantly. Shai Hope did well to play his strokes with timing and panache while Alick Athanaze couple brute force and gap finding to ensure that a boundary came off his willow whenever a bad ball was bowled. The hosts did well to knock off a good chunk of the target in the first 6 overs, scoring 75 runs off it.
The middle overs saw West Indies lose Alick Athanaze, who stitched a good partnership with Hope. Pooran walked out to the idle and didn't need much time to open his arms and hit his first six. That wasn't all from Pooran, who had a piece of Burger, smashing him for four maximums in the last 4 balls of the over. Hope got to his 50, but was dismissed soon after.
It took only a couple of deliveries from Kruger for Pooran to set loose yet again as he smashed his way t a 50 and managed to score 17 runs off Kruger's 3rd over. Powell was dismissed towards the end, but Chase walked out and calmly tucked it down the legside with ease and helping the hosts take a 1-0 lead.
It was a poor bowling performance from South Africa. Only Ottneil Baartman managed to pick up the 2 wickets to fall. Patrick Kruger and Nandre Burger disappointed with the ball in hand while Kwena Maphaka managed to do things in bits and pieces looking to slow down the chase.
Let's now go down and hear what the captains have to say
17.5 Kwena Maphaka to Roston Chase, FOUR! West Indies go 1-0 up in the series. A mesmerizing knock from Pooran as he remains unbeaten on 65. Angles the slow delivery into the pads, Chase glances it past the keeper and seals it in style
Roston Chase, RHB, walks out to the middle and will be on strike
17.4 Kwena Maphaka to Rovman Powell, OUT! End of a struggling stay by Powell! He tries to finish things off in style but can't control his cover drive. Picks out the fielder at extra cover and the catch has been taken safely.
Rovman Powell c Patrick Kruger b Kwena Maphaka 7(15b,0x4,0x6)
17.3 Kwena Maphaka to Rovman Powell, attacks the middle stump from a good length, driven down the track
17.2 Kwena Maphaka to Rovman Powell, back of a length angling outside off, Powell punches it to backward point
17.1 Kwena Maphaka to Rovman Powell, nails the yorker on middle stump, Powell brings his bat to jam this into the crease
Mere formalities remain as West Indies need 3 runs to win. This has been a dominant batting display from the hosts, who are all set to take a 1-0 lead in this series
