Asian Games 2023 Highlights, October 1: Day 8 proved to be a moving day for Indian Sports as they gained momentum at Asian Games 2023. They have crossed the 50-medal mark on the tally and will be rejuvenated in their campaign to reach 100 medals. Follow Sportskeeda for Asian Games 2023 live Score updates on October 1.

Right then, that brings to end a day that has been nothing short of eclectic, sensational and triumphant for the Indian contingent! It all started off with Aditi Ashok settling for the silver medal, shooting making some final contributions to the tally on the final day of the sport and some terrific results in squash. What followed was an entertaining couple of hours in the evening as India added a plethora of medals to their tally on the back of the Track & Field athletes! India's medal tally has crossed the 50-medal mark and the 100-medal dream will definitely still stand! A silver medal for India and they will surely be heartbroken after the start that they had gotten. Lakshya Sen and Rankireddy/Chirag got India off to a flier but India could not capitalise on it as they let the Chinese make a comeback and take the tie 3-2. Kidambi Shrikanth's match was the one which turned it around for China, who knew they had a shot at gold as soon as they had won that match. With India's inexperienced shuttlers following, they could not match the skills displayed by their Chinese counterparts. In the end, the Indian team will settle for silver.

Oh well, this is turning out to be quite a one-sided contest. The Indian is hardly any match against Weng and particularly in this game, seems lacking in confidence as well. He's trying to get Weng to play on his backhand but some smart manoeuvring from the Chinese shuttler is forcing Mithun to play to his strengths.

Okay then, we're taking back what we said. It's not a bronze for Yarraji, it's not a bronze for India. SILVER FOR YARRAJI, SILVER FOR INDIA! Forgive the screaming but we hope you understand how excited we are. Yanni Wu has been disqualified for the false start. Incredible race, plenty of drama. Probably a little too much drama. But in the end, Jyothi Yarraji comes away with a Silver medal.

BASKETBALL - India vs China

A massive loss for India and they have been comprehensively beaten by China in the Women's Preliminary Round. For India, they could score only 53 points as Pushpa Kumar, Shireen Limaye and Sanjana Ramesh top-scored with 14, 12 and 14 points respectively. However, it was nowhere near enough. Yueru Li top-scored with 25 points while Xu Han managed 15 points. Nonetheless, it will be a good learning curve for the Indians, who will be disheartened for sure.

ATHLETICS - Women's 100m Hurdles final

BRONZE FOR YARRAJI! BRONZE FOR INDIA! Oh we know you know. We're just reasserting it since we have received confirmation that Yarraji is, in fact, third with a time 12.91s. Yanni Wu retains her second place, and Yuwei Lin, as we know, wins gold.

ATHLETICS - Women's 100m Hurdles final

BRONZE FOR YARRAJI! BRONZE FOR INDIA! As of now at least. Yuwei Lin finished the race in first with Yanni Wu in second. Jyothi Yarraji did finish third but for now we wait for a confirmation given what happened at the start of the race with the confusion from the false start. Oh well, China are nearing a century of points! Meanwhile, India are struggling. With five minutes to go in the fourth quarter, this is turning out to be quite a one-sided thrashing that the Indians are facing at the hands of the Chinese.

Okay a little confusion out there. Yanni Wu of China is ejected for a false start. But the officials have ejected Jyothi Yarraji as well. We'll come back with an update as soon as we have one!

YET ANOTHER BRONZE FOR INDIA! Seema Punia comes third in the Women's Discus Throw with a season-best throw of 58.62m. That takes India's medal tally past 50. We're at a total of 51 medals in the 2023 Asian Games.

ATHLETICS - Women's Heptathlon

BRONZE FOR INDIA! That 800m run from Nandini Agasara sees her climb to third place and clinch the bronze medal in the Women's Heptathlon with 5712 points. Swapna Barman finishes right behind her compatriou with 5708 points. Good showing and a bronze medal to show for it.

ATHLETICS - Women's Heptathlon

In the seventh and final part of the Women's Heptathlon! India's Nandini Agasara puts in a personal best time of 2:15.33 and finishes first while Swapna Barman finishes third with a season best time of 2:16.74. We will just need to wait and see how this impacts their overall standings in Heptathlon!

Sreeshankar does not get the finish that he wanted. He finishes with a score of 8.00 and his score of 8.19 starts. SO THERE IS A MEDAL! SILVER MEDAL FOR INDIA! Murali Sreeshankar take a bow! He has given it his all but just by a margin of 3cm, he finishes second. Nonetheless, it will be a silver medal for Sreeshankar.

MEDALS ALERT! AJAY KUMAR SAROJ WINS SILVER, JINSON JOHNSON WINS BRONZE! They finish just behind Qatar's Algarni and a last moment boost by Jinson helps him go past the the third position runner to finish third! Saroj finishes with a score of 3:38.94 and Jinson Johnson finishes with a score of 3:39.74 minutes!

Action now shifts to the Men's 1500m Final as Jinson Johnson and Ajay Kumar Saroj are in action. Indians will pin their hopes on them to help reach the 50-medal tally mark today!

MEDAL ALERT! HARMILAN BAINS WINS SILVER! Whew! It was a close race throughout and Harmilan Bains has added a silver medal to India's tally! Bains finishes with a time of 4:12.74 minutes.

When it rains, it pours! Li comes away with a flurry of points. He also had a lot of close calls (rightly) go his way. Signs of luck, but you know what they say - fortune favours the brave. Li Shifeng completely outplayed Srikanth in that second game to drag China right back into this tie.

India has dual representation in the Women's 1500m Final in Harmilan Bains and Deeksha. India will pin their hopes on them to add some more medals to this tally!

In the fourth attempt, Jeswin Johnson manages a score of 7.72 and Murali Sreeshankar goes past the 8m mark! However, the jump's legality is being checked. He stands with the umpires and he is explaining his side of the story. His toe does not seem to have touched the no-go orange zone. It stands just inside it on initial glance. It is a matter of literal centimetres! It's been given as a legal jump and his score is 8.19! Just 0.03 behind China's Wang. He is disappointed but pumped up!

TAJINDERPAL SINGH TOOR WINS GOLD! Holds the tricolour and he had made India proud! He did not have the best of starts, with two unsuccessful attempts initially. He has consistently improved his scores! His fifth attempt was not successful once again but he makes a terrific comeback on his sixth to land a 20.36m throw, the best of the lot to win himself GOLD! Not often that you see the best throw coming on the sixth attempt but that's exactly what Toor has achieved!
