Axar Patel: I've said it before as well that I've been performing well for the last year with the bat. I always look to contribute lower down the order whenever my team needs me to. I always knew that my technique was always good and when I get a break, I look to work on it. I work with the coaches like Rahul sir. They always tell me that I have the capability. Whenever I get a chance I try and see how I can win the game for my team. You will find it tough on this wicket initially but once you get used to the pace of this surface it gets easier. Once you get set you have to concentrate a lot more. Jadeja and I were talking the same - to not lose focus and bat until the end. When we bat first tomorrow I think it'll play well (laughs) but when we bowl, we'll be fresh so I think we'll get more help

It was a day of mixed reactions from both sides but India had the ante over their opponents.

India captain Rohit Sharma scored his ninth Test ton and first against Australia. Ravindra Jadeja (66*) and Axar Patel (52*) slammed fifties to wear out the Australian bowling attack on a turning track.

Australia's moment of the day was 22-year-old debutant Todd Murphy bagged a five-wicket haul. His dismissals include KL Rahul, Ravichandran Ashwin, Cheteshwar Pujara, Virat Kohli and KS Bharat.

The third day will determine depending on how long India's lower oder can stretch their lead and how Aussies play in the second innings.

Ravindra Jadeja, who snared 5/47 on Test comeback in the Australian innings, joined forces with Rohit at the crease. The two combined for 58-run stand as the latter scored a magnificent century.

How has Australian bowlers fared so far?

Murphy has played a vital role with the ball to put back the pressure on India at some point. But much to Scott Boland's credit, the pacer has been phenomenal. Just seven runs conceded from nine overs without conceding any boundary.

When Murphy and Boland bowled in tandem, the runs automatically dried up from India. The two senior bowlers Cummins and Lyon have been expensive in this innings and yet to get a major success.

Rohit Sharma has taken Cummins to the cleaners around the VCA Stadium. He didn't go easy on Lyon too.

Australia can be satisfied with those couple of wickets in the second half of the session. The day started with Rohit and Ashwin taking their time to get into the hitting zone.

Murphy and Boland can bowl in tandem to absorb the pressure and also find a momentum to get a breakthrough.

KS Bharat: Definitely a proud moment for me and my whole family, thanks for everyone who believed in me, can't get better than this. Odd days even keeping wasn't easy, comes with all the challenges, with DRS you got to be more proactive, you need to have the understanding of where the ball is landing and where the ball is ending, which makes it little interesting but definitely enjoying. Was expecting a chance that I can come into play, right from ball one, thankfully there was chance with Labuschagne and I grabbed on to it, the whole team did well to restricting them to the target what they got. We should as a batting unit, bat well and put them out of the game and bat once, the first hour will be crucial.
