Nethra Kumanan (IND)

Race 2 - 16th

A lot to play for in the next four days, with Nethra set to feature in two races each day in her and the country's quest for Olympic glory! As for today's coverage, on behalf of my colleague Mohamed Farzan and myself Prasen Moudgal, thanks for joining us!

Top 10 standings at the end of Race 2 of the Women's Laser Radial event

11:52 (IST)25 JUL 2021

Nethra crossed the finish line in 16th position

11:41 (IST)25 JUL 2021

Nethra Kumanan drops down the pile to cross Mark 4 and the finish line in 16th position.

The Indian sailer lost a bit of pace later on during the downwind path and towards the finish line, but a valiant effort nonetheless to finish inside the Top 20 and improve her overall rank as we end Day 1 of the Women's Laser Radial race.

11:40 (IST)25 JUL 2021

The downwind path now gets us near to Mark 4, and there's no change in storyline at the top of the order.

Germany's Svenja crosses Mark 4 at 43.32, followed by Croatia's Elena 0.26 min later and Hoest 0.29 min after.

11:32 (IST)25 JUL 2021

Nethra crosses Mark 3 in 9th place. The Indian sailer lost a few positions as she opted to go in straight and then took a sharp turn, just fitting in between Great Britain and Lithuania to stay inside the Top 10.

1 minute and 14 seconds behind Germany's Svenja.

11:30 (IST)25 JUL 2021

Germany's Svenja crosses Mark 3 with a time of 35.14.

11:28 (IST)25 JUL 2021

We're now nearing Mark 3, with Nethra opting for a wide in approach to make the most of the wind on offer. She's in 6th place right now as we get to the important turn!

11:27 (IST)25 JUL 2021

The biggest positive from Nethra's effort in the second race is her consistency, which has ensured she stays within the Top 10 throughout. With 8 races to go over the course of the next few days, every race is vital!

11:19 (IST)25 JUL 2021

Nethra circles around Mark 2 in 5th place! Good to see the Indian sailer climbing up the ranks, she's 52 seconds behind the German leader.

11:18 (IST)25 JUL 2021

We're nearing Mark 2, and the German sailer Svenja Weger has a massive 31 second lead over 2nd placed Elena from Croatia!

Things are getting intense in Tokyo! Croatia's Elena is pushing hard to take the lead from Germany's Svenja.

11:13 (IST)25 JUL 2021

Nethra enjoying a friendly breeze in her favour as she cruises on towards Mark 2, she's currently in 7th place.

11:10 (IST)25 JUL 2021

Nethra in 6th place! She manages to scrape past Mark 1 and just behind the USA sailer as they now move towards Mark 2. Big movement up the field for Nethra, who is 33rd overall.

11:08 (IST)25 JUL 2021

The Indian sailer firmly in the Top 10 as we near Mark 1. Can she cross within the Top 10 mark?

Nethra has bounced back and is proving her worth. She'll surely look to finish within the Top 10 and make it to the next round of the event.

11:05 (IST)25 JUL 2021

Nethra is now 4th! She's among the leaders for the first time today, only 22 seconds behind the leader, Croatia's Elena

11:03 (IST)25 JUL 2021

Nethra is among the Top 10! What a second race this is turning out to be for the Indian sailer, as she gets ever so close to the German, Israeli and Lithuanian sailers in the lead.

10:59 (IST)25 JUL 2021

An early lead for Hungary's Maria Erdi, and she has Denmark's Anne-Marie in 2nd and China's Zhang for company.

10:58 (IST)25 JUL 2021

Hello folks! Welcome back to the coverage of Race 2, where Nethra will look to improve on her 33rd position!

09:49 (IST)25 JUL 2021

Until then, you can surf through our coverage of the Men's 10m Air Rifle qualification event, where Divyansh Panwar and Deepak Kumar are vying for the Top 8 spots and a spot in the final!

09:47 (IST)25 JUL 2021

Don't go anywhere, Nethra will again be in action in Race 2 of the Women's Laser Radial event, which should get underway in a few minutes for now. We'd have been sailing by now, but inclement weather conditions at the Enoshima Yacht Harbour have forced the delay of the event.

09:46 (IST)25 JUL 2021

Right then, not the most convincing of races from Nethra Kumanan, but with the competition that's on offer, Nethra can take heart from languishing almost at the bottom of the table in 40th to climbing up a few places to cross the line in 33rd.

09:29 (IST)25 JUL 2021

Results at the end of Race 1 -

Nethra Kumanan (INDIA) - 33rd place

Winners -
Cristina Bajo (SPAIN)
Vasileia Karachaliou (GREECE)
Shazrin Latif (MALAYSIA)

09:24 (IST)25 JUL 2021

Nethra crosses Mark 4 in 33rd position, a little over 3.35 min behind race leader Cristina.

09:22 (IST)25 JUL 2021

Cristina passes Mark 4 as she heads towards the finish line, and she's got a very slender 4/100th of a second lead over Greece's Vasleila.

09:21 (IST)25 JUL 2021

Spain's Cristina is at the top, while Germany's Svenja climbs three spots and finds herself at the second rank during the fourth leg. Malaysia's Nur Shazrin is third.

Cristina looks strong and is guaranteed a finish in the top 5. Doesn't seem that the other sailers could overtake her. She's eyeing the first rank for sure!

09:19 (IST)25 JUL 2021

Nethra was 33rd after Mark 3

09:19 (IST)25 JUL 2021

Nethra Kumanan rises 7 spots to reach Mark 3 in 33rd place!

Only two seconds behind the leader when compared to how far she was behind at Mark 2, and that's a substantial improvement from the Indian sailer. She's 3 minutes and 38 seconds behind Spain's Cristina overall, and getting to Mark 4 just outside the Top 30 is a possibility.

09:17 (IST)25 JUL 2021

At Mark 3, Spain's Cristina is 1st, followed by Germany's Svenja and Malaysia's Shazrin.

09:10 (IST)25 JUL 2021

Top 10 after Leg 3

09:01 (IST)25 JUL 2021

Spain's Cristiana starts the third leg on a positive note. She's leading the race with Germany's Svenja behind her. The distance between them is hardly a few meters and Svenja will look to overtake the Spanish sailer soon.

08:58 (IST)25 JUL 2021

As it stand

08:57 (IST)25 JUL 2021

Nethra was in 40th position at Mark 1, 3.06 min behind the leader. She hasn't managed to better her position at Mark 2, and she's still in 40th place, trailing by 3,36 min behind Spain's Cristina.

08:57 (IST)25 JUL 2021

At Mark 2, it seems like the lead is firmly with Spain's Cristina, while Cyprus' Makri is in second and Malaysia's Shazrin is in third.

08:51 (IST)25 JUL 2021

Well, we enter the second leg of the event.

Spain's Cristina is leading the race. Croatia's Elena, who finished first at the end of the first leg seems to be out of sight now. She's been left behind and is missing out on her chances to make it to the Top 10.

08:46 (IST)25 JUL 2021

We've got to the 1st mark!

Croatia's Elena records the best time of 10.49, followed by Spain's Cristina and Cyprus' Marilena Makri.

08:43 (IST)25 JUL 2021

We've got a new leader now, with Croatia's Elena Vorobeva cruising ahead of Spain's Cristina Pujol!

And just as we type that, Cristina has sailed past Elena to steal the lead! A tough fight at the top between Croatia, Spain, Germany & Malaysia. Denmark's Anne Marie falls behind in the race and is not in the Top 5 now.

08:41 (IST)25 JUL 2021

Denmark's Anne Marie is now second, with Germany's Svenja Weger enjoying a small lead over her rival.

08:40 (IST)25 JUL 2021

First signs of Nethra! She's currently between 30th - 37th, and battling alongside Ireland, Israel and Lithuania for a jump in position!

Nethra will have to push herself to break into the top 10!

08:38 (IST)25 JUL 2021

Nethra isn't among the leaders yet, with Denmark's Anne-Marie, Australia's Mara Stransky and Netherlands' Marit Bouwmeester in the lead.

08:36 (IST)25 JUL 2021

Quite tricky weather conditions in Tokyo currently, with the humidity at 45% and the temperature at 27 degrees celsius.

08:35 (IST)25 JUL 2021

We're off! A good start for Denmark, Netherlands and Canada follow in 2nd and 3rd.

08:34 (IST)25 JUL 2021

A minute away from the first sailing race at Tokyo 2020!

08:32 (IST)25 JUL 2021

We're about 3 minutes away from the start of the race! All eyes on Nethra, in what is going to be a historic event for Indian sports!

Nethra is going to be one of the 44 racers taking part in today's first two races of the 10-race competition. An important start will be vital to her chances of finishing in the Top 10.
