UFC 229 was quite the pay-per-view UFC event.

It left UFC with two of their top fighters out of action, with Conor McGregor and Khabib Nurmagomedov suspended indefinitely. However, the two might be facing even harsher fines and suspensions when the UFC, McGregor, and Nurmagomedov go up before the Nevada Athletic Commission for judgement.

The post-fight brawl's repercussions were felt around the world as the fans reacted to their favourite fighters acting in such an unprofessional manner. The brawn has been analysed from every possible angle and blame assigned by all the 'expert' fans out there.

At this point, however, one thing has been forgotten in the chaos following the event.

UFC 229 was supposed to be Conor McGregor's return fight in the UFC. Thanks to the events following the fight, the return has been put on hold for a while. However, eventually, McGregor will be allowed to return to the Octagon once more. And when he does, UFC and fans will be faced with a critical question.

What next for Conor McGregor? Who does he face next?

In this article, we will be looking at 4 possible opponents for Conor McGregor to face next. Any of these fights would be a good match for the 'Notorious One'.

#4 Donald 'Cowboy' Cerrone

Donald 'Cowboy' Cerrone recently won a critical victory at UFC Denver over Mike Perry. The victory saw him come out of a recent slump he had been facing. The win also came in front of his family.

In the post-fight presser which followed, Cerrone made it clear to the fans that UFC had a big match already planned for him. Later he went on to hint that the planned bout was against none other than Conor McGregor.

Since then Dana White has issued a disclaimer saying that nothing is fixed as far as Conor McGregor is concerned ahead of his hearing with the Nevada Athletic Commission.

While the bout may not be confirmed, it might be safe to say that a fight between the 'Cowboy' and 'Notorious' Conor McGregor would be one that would draw a lot of attention to it.

#3 Khabib Nurmagomedov

Conor McGregor is not best known for letting old grudges lie.

A defeat at the hands of Nate Diaz saw him work and train to make sure that he was better prepared for him the next time the two of them went at it inside the Octagon. Not only was he better prepared this time around, but he also went on to win the fight.

After a humiliating defeat to Khabib Nurmagomedov which saw McGregor submit and give up halfway through his bout at UFC 229, the 'Notorious One' will definitely be working on being better prepared for Nurmagomedov's offence if he were to get a rematch with him.

One thing's for sure, McGregor will not be letting go of Khabib that easily. Whether he gets another bout or not is another matter, but if the two were to face off, the fight might be even bigger than the last time this time around.

#2 Tony Ferguson

Tony Ferguson is one of the best fighters in the entire UFC. If not the best, he certainly is superlative when it comes to the amount of passion which he inserts into each and every fight he is a part of.

After defeating Anthony Pettis, Tony Ferguson is the obvious Number 1 Contender for the UFC Lightweight Championship. Now, the Champion, Khabib Nurmagomedov is out of action until the Nevada Athletic Commission hands out a decree about his future.

Even if the suspension is for a short period, Ferguson will possibly have to wait for the Nurmagomedov fight, with Khabib and Floyd 'Money' Mayweather exchanging barbs over social media about a possible fight against each other.

If this were to happen, it would mean that Ferguson would have a huge waiting period ahead of him before his fight for the UFC Lightweight Championship.

What better fight could he hope for during this time, than one with 'Notorious' Conor McGregor?

A fight against Conor McGregor would help him to wait out the time until he could compete for the UFC Lightweight Championship. The fight could even be for the Interim title. This could be the ultimate bout for him before finally facing Khabib Nurmagomedov.

#1 Georges St-Pierre

UFC 217: Bisping v St-Pierre

Georges St-Pierre, aka GSP, is possibly one of the best fighters to have ever walked into a UFC Octagon.

Since his return to Mixed Martial Arts in 2016, he has faced none other than Michael Bisping and defeated him to continue his incredible 13-fight undefeated streak. Whatever else be the matter at the moment, GSP is the star to beat at the moment.

On the other side of things, Conor McGregor has blazed his own trail in the UFC as well. Somehow or other, these two fighters never ended up facing each other.

For a long while, there has been speculation among fans as to what would happen if the 'Notorious' Conor McGregor and Georges St-Pierre were to face off in the Octagon. This is not an impossible fight either, ranking at the level of a 'Super Fight'.

A fight between these two could once again end up breaking all the records set for pay-per-view buys in the UFC.
