For the longest time, UFC believed that there was never an excuse to actually cancel a show. Their motto was nothing else except the show must go on, and that's exactly what happened for the longest time before UFC 151 came around.

2012 had been a bad year for UFC with too many of their shows being put out without huge fights. UFC 151 was going to be an exception to the rule.

Jon Jones was set to defend his UFC World Light Heavyweight Title against Dan Henderson. However, an injury to Henderson meant that UFC had to scramble to find a replacement for him on short notice.

They came up with Chael Sonnen, but Jones refused to fight him. Without a second fight on the card that people would pay to see, the show ended up getting cancelled altogether. A large portion of the blame was assigned to Jones for refusing to fight Sonnen, but UFC have no one except themselves to blame for putting together such a thin card to begin with.
