UFC 113’s semi-main event featured a major welterweight grudge match between two of the UFC’s bad boys, Josh Koscheck and Paul Daley.

Unfortunately, despite the fight ending climactically in favor of Koscheck, Daley simply wasn’t willing to let the grudge lie – costing him his UFC roster spot in the process.

The two men had engaged in a major war of words coming into the event. Bizarrely, it largely centered around which man “wore the black hat” of a villain better.

This made more sense when it was revealed that the winner would be set to fight the ultimate good guy – UFC welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre – in a title fight later in the year. But it still felt like strange marketing from the promotion.

In the end, though, despite the hype, the fight was largely a damp squib. Koscheck simply outwrestled ‘Semtex’ to take a unanimous decision, and took the opportunity to verbally taunt his British opponent throughout the fight in the process.

That was enough to push Daley over the edge. When the fight ended, he decided to take another swing at his opponent, landing a shocking sucker punch on an unsuspecting Koscheck before referee Dan Miragliotta was able to restrain him.

Naturally, everyone was stunned – including UFC President Dana White, who unceremoniously fired Daley after the event and banned him from ever returning to the UFC.

Sure, Koscheck had definitely been hugely antagonistic, but from a long-term point of view, this was one grudge Daley would’ve been better off letting go.

#3: Fabricio Werdum vs. Travis Browne – UFC 203

After beating Travis Browne at UFC 203, Fabricio Werdum bizarrely came to blows with Browne's coach

When Fabricio Werdum and Travis Browne faced off for the second time at UFC 203, the fight was largely one-sided in favor of Werdum. He basically out-fought ‘Hapa’ in every possible area, resulting in a clear-cut unanimous decision victory.

Evidently, though, nobody gave Browne’s coach Edmond Tarverdyan that memo. He’d already been overheard telling Browne that Werdum “didn’t have sh*t” for him in his corner between rounds – perhaps suggesting that he thought his fighter deserved a win.

Post-fight, when Werdum made a “crying” gesture at a portion of the crowd that were booing, the Armenian-American decided to take action. He attempted to square up to ‘Vai Cavalo’, only for the former UFC heavyweight champion to hit him with a front kick to the chest.

This was enough for mayhem to break loose inside the octagon, with Browne lunging at his opponent and both sets of cornermen – including Werdum’s friend and notorious loose cannon Renato ‘Babalu’ Sobral – looking to get involved.

UFC officials quickly spilled into the octagon to stop things from escalating, and the whole debacle ended with Browne and Tarverdyan – as well as their other team members – being ejected.

This was a truly wild scene and remains one of the only times in UFC history that a coach and a fighter ended up coming to blows inside the octagon. More to the point, it only added to Tarverdyan’s reputation as one of MMA’s most controversial figures.
