Breaking: Alexander Volkanovski and Islam Makhachev set to fight for the UFC Lightweight Title and Pound for Pound No.1-ranked status at UFC 284 in Perth, Australia

Alexander Volkanovski will officially fight Islam Makhachev for the lightweight world championship at UFC 284 in Perth, Australia.

As soon as UFC 284 was announced for Australia, MMA fans anticipated Volkanovski to be on the fight card. The stars began to align after ‘The Great” entered the cage at UFC 280 for a faceoff against Makahchev. Plans were then halted when rumors started spreading about the UFC potentially going in a different direction.

All of the rumors and speculations are meaningless now. The UFC posted the official announcement for Volkanovski vs Makhachev on Twitter:

Alexander Volkanovski must have known before the announcement that his fight at UFC 284 was official. This is especially considering his confidence in the matchup materializing during UFC 281 fight week. The featherweight champion kept his first reaction simple by saying this on his Instagram story:

Volkanovski’s lightweight title fight against Islam Makhachev has massive stakes involved. ‘The Great’ can further his legacy by becoming a two-division champion. The situation seems perfect for the featherweight champion to have a fairytale ending. However, Makhachev is hunting for that number one spot, and he's recently looked unbeatable.
