Nate Diaz has not competed in mixed martial arts in nearly two years, last appearing in the octagon when he defeated Tony Ferguson via fourth-round submission in the main event of UFC 279. While he had originally been set to face Khamzat Chimaev, the card was reshuffled after 'Borz' missed weight by seven and a half pounds.Dustin Poirier recently revealed that he agreed to step in and face Diaz at welterweight on less than 24 hours notice. Speaking to Ariel Helwani of The MMA Hour, 'The Diamond' stated:"Dude, I even accepted a fight against him on 24 hours notice. I was going to fly to Vegas and weigh in the same day. The night of the Khamzat stuff. I don't think I've ever told this story before... My management, Hunter [Campbell] everybody from the UFC [was] reaching out saying, 'hey, he's not going to make weight, can you make 170?'"Poirier continued:"Imm'm FaceTiming with the Nevada State Athletic Commission stepping on the scale so I can show them I can make weight safely.
