Daniel Cormier revealed that Jon Jones sent him condolences when his parents passed away.

Cormier and Jones had one of the most historic rivalries in MMA history. Throughout their interactions since 2014, the former UFC light heavyweights have had aggressive verbal arguments, physical altercations, and two fights inside the Octagon.

During a recent interview with Henry Cejudo, ‘DC’ opened up about his relationship with ‘Bones.’ He had this to say about putting their feelings aside when the other lost a parent:

“We talked about each other families, but in the darkest moments, in the darkest moments, when his mother passed, when my father passed, he sent me a message, he really did, and even in that moment, I appreciated that. For all that we’ve been through, I appreciated him sending me that message as I sent that message for his mother because we understand what family is… He did send me a message when my mother passed and my father passed.” [2:10-2:37]

Jones won the rivalry with Cormier by emerging victorious in both meetings in the Octagon. They were supposed to fight for the first time in September 2014 before ‘Bones’ pulled out with a torn meniscus. Three months later, the highly-anticipated matchup went down at UFC 182, with ‘DC’ losing by unanimous decision.

They would have two more fight cancelations after 'DC' suffered an injury and Jones failed a drug test. Their second fight wouldn’t happen until July 2017. Jones secured a vicious third-round knockout, but the win was later turned into a no-contest after he failed a drug test for banned substances. Over the past few years, Cormier and ‘Bones’ seem closer to officially burying the hatchet.

Daniel Cormier says ‘there’s good in’ Jon Jones

Jon Jones’ character and morals have been questioned in the past for actions outside of the Octagon. Although Daniel Cormier has been in a heated rivalry with ‘Bones’ for years, ‘DC’ does believe he does have good inside of him. During the same interview with Henry Cejudo, the UFC commentator had this to say:

“There’s good in that dude, there really is, there’s good in that dude. I just ain’t really had the opportunity to see it, but we will see, we will see what time brings.” 2:38-2:48

Daniel Cormier retired in August 2020 after losing against Stipe Miocic for the second time. Since then, the former two-division UFC champion has succeeded as a broadcaster and content creator. Meanwhile, Jon Jones last fought on March 4, defeating Ciryl Gane to become the UFC heavyweight champion. ‘Bones’ is expected to defend his throne against Miocic later this year.
