Devin Haney's pursuit of a fight against Teofimo Lopez was purely a financially motivated decision, according to his former promoter Eddie Hearn. The chairman of Matchroom Boxing recently unpacked the alleged money troubles of Haney and his father, Bill, during an interview with FightHype.

Hearn claimed that 'The Dream' spent the expected purse he would receive from a rematch against Ryan Garcia, which collapsed after Garcia's unexpected loss to Rolando Romero on May 2.

The fallout from Garcia's loss to Romero has been felt most by Haney, according to Hearn. He recently discussed his former client's situation following the press conference for Richardson Hitchins vs. George Kambosas Jr., saying:

"Devin probably spent most of the Ryan Garcia [rematch] money already. And now obviously the fight's not happening, so Devin and Bill will want to get a big fight moving. When the Ryan Garcia fight fell through, they're thinking, 'Who are we gonna fight?' Obviously the opportunity to fight Teofimo presented itself, sounds like they were all in. But it sounds like Teo had other plans."

Haney suffered an unexpected decision defeat to Garcia when the pair clashed in April 2024. 'KingRy' had displayed some alarming behavior during the fight's build-up, and many did not expect him to perform.

But following the event, it was confirmed that Garcia had failed two pre-fight drug tests for ostarine. This led to the result of their bout being overturned to a no-contest, and plans for a rematch between the pair have been discussed numerous times since.

Devin Haney slammed by Richardson Hitchins ahead of first IBF title defense

Richardson Hitchins is scheduled to make the first defense of his IBF super-lightweight world title against George Kambosas Jr. on June 14. Ahead of the title bout, Hitchins took aim at former WBC super-lightweight world champion Devin Haney, claiming him to be an overrated talent in the sport.

The IBF champion's comments came during a recent interview with @Naji, the founder of Cigar Talk. He said:

"These guys are goofy. Devin ain't s**t. I've been saying it for years. He ain't s**t. I promise you, bro. When we fight I'ma show you, he's not s**t. I really believe that. Who's he beaten? Who's Lomachenko beat?"
