Did Mike Tyson face any punishment for biting Evander Holyfield? Read about the entire saga

Holyfield v Tyson II
Evander Holyfield vs. Mike Tyson II.

Mike Tyson's bite of Evander Holyfield landed him in a lot of hot water.

'Iron Mike' and 'The Real Deal' first faced off in November 1996. Heading into the contest, Holyfield was a massive underdog as Tyson was riding a wave of momentum at the time. He had recently exited prison and was dominating his opponents.

However, the underdog wasn't going to falter that night. Holyfield was able to withstand the early onslaught from Tyson and went on the attack in the second half of the fight. After battering the favorite for a few rounds, he scored a stoppage win in the 11th round.

The following June, Evander Holyfield and Mike Tyson went head-to-head once again. This time, however, the contest wasn't remembered for any punches or anything like that. Instead, it's remembered as one of the wildest moments in sports history.

After being headbutted, Tyson lost his cool in the third round. In that round, he bit Holyfield's ear multiple times, even taking a chunk out of the champion's ear. Following the end of the round, Tyson was disqualified and had a post-fight brawl.

As a result of Mike Tyson's bite, he was suspended for the indefinite future by the Nevada State Athletic Commission. Along with that, he was fined $3 million dollars. The following year, Tyson had his boxing license reinstated by the commission.

Mike Tyson bite: Are 'Iron Mike' and Evander Holyfield friends now?

Despite taking a chunk out of Evander Holyfield, Mike Tyson's bite didn't have a long-term effect.

The fight wound up being the last in the series between 'The Real Deal' and 'Iron Mike'. Although there were rumors the two would clash on a third occasion, it never came to fruition.

Tyson retired as a professional boxer in 2005, while Holyfield called it quits nine years later. Now, over a decade after the two ended their time as boxers, they've become friends and business partners.

It's not exactly a secret that Mike Tyson is a fan of cannabis. Over the last few years, the former champion has mellowed out partly thanks to the drug. Tyson is such a big believer in its medical uses that he's starting his own brand to sell products.

He's also brought Evander Holyfield into the fold as well. In November, the two announced that they were producing 'Holy Bites', a clear nod to Tyson's previous bite in the rematch. The two former heavyweights even co-starred in a few hilarious commercials together.
