Dustin Poirier and Justin Gaethje are two of the best lightweight fighters in the UFC. The pair are currently the No.2 and No.3-ranked fighters in the division and have fought once before. On 15 April, 2018, Poirier fought Gaethje in the main event of the UFC on Fox 29 card. The card took place at the Gila River Arena in Glendale, Arizona.

'The Diamond' and 'The Highlight' were expected to put on a show in what was being touted as a fight between two future title contenders. The bout lived up to expectations. Early on in the contest, 'The Highlight's leg kicks went unchecked by Poirier, and the commentators were concerned whether it would be a problem for 'The Diamond' as the fight progressed.

Take a look at the highlights:

The second and third rounds continued in the same fashion, with Gaethje piling on the pressure and dictating the pace of the fight. He absorbed a lot of punishment from 'The Diamond' but the cumulative damage of his leg kicks finally started to show. Poirier also got hit with an overhand right that stunned him but he managed to stay on his feet.

In the fourth round, Dustin Poirier came out all guns blazing as he looked to end the fight. When Gaethje threw a leg kick, he countered with a flurry of punches that prompted the referee to call a stop to the contest.

Who is Dustin Poirier fighting next?

Dustin Poirier will fight Michael Chandler next at UFC 281: Israel Adesanya vs. Alex Pereira. The fight is part of the main card and sees the No.2-ranked Poirier take on the No.5-ranked Chandler at Madison Square Garden in New York.

Both fighters will be looking to strengthen their case for title contention. The lightweight division has a new champion named Islam Makhachev. So, everyone in the top 5 is hungry for a title shot.

Poirier is looking to become the lightweight champion after holding the interim title previously. Chandler, on the other hand, is looking to get back to his dominant best after just one win in his last three fights.
