Contrary to company president Dana White's claims, the UFC 284 card did not break UFC 205's record in terms of gate revenue. However, Australia's latest card featuring the featherweight champion taking on the lightweight champ may surpass UFC 205 in pay-per-view (PPV) buys, as per Dana White's predictions.
The gate revenue numbers for UFC 284 according to Money MMA, are $4,086,688 USD ($5,911,598 AUD). In comparison, UFC 205 did $13 million more than at $17,700,000 in terms of gate revenue, and did 1,130,000 PPV buys.
In an interview with Jim Rome, Dana White said the following in response to Islam Makhachev's concerns about UFC 284 not being promoted enough:
"Yeah, it's not true. First of all, I've talked to Islam. Who interviewed him? Who translated for him? I mean, the guy speaks Russian. You know, [his words were] taken out of context, like most of the things in the media."

When asked by Jim Rome, whether Makhachev said those things or not, White said the following:
"First of all, he lives in Dagestan. What does he know about what's going on for the promotion of the fight? He doesn't know anything. It's going to be one of the top five biggest [fight cards] of all time. The event is sold out. I mean, you couldn't get a ticket if you wanted to get a ticket in Perth.
"And, this thing is trending right now to be the biggest pay-per-view event in Australia - which it is 6% behind the Conor McGregor/ [Dustin] Poirier 3 fight."
UFC 264: Poirier vs. McGregor 3 garnered 1.8 million pay-per-view buys, making it the second biggest card in terms of pay-per-view buys for a UFC event.
Was UFC 284 the biggest event in Australian MMA history?
UFC 284 was a sold-out event with 14,124 fans in attendance at the RAC arena in Perth, Australia. While the pay-per-view numbers are still not out, the gate revenue numbers have come out.
According to Sports Manor, the event made $4,086,688 USD ($5,911,598 AUD), making it the highest gate record for any event in the island-continent.
The promotion returned to Perth, Australia for the first time since 2018. The last event to be held there was UFC 221, headlined by former middleweight champion Luke Rockhold facing Yoel Romero. Romero scored a brutal third-round knockout of Rockhold in the bout.
The event also had former middleweight king Israel Adesanya making his promotional debut against Rob Wilkinson, and scoring a second-round TKO.
However, UFC 221 only brought in 130,000 PPV purchases, according to Tapology.
The last time the promotion was in Australia was for UFC 243, where former champions Israel Adesanya and Robert Whittaker fought in a rematch. Unlike their first meeting, where 'The Reaper' suffered a second-round knockout, while putting up a better fight.
The event took place at the Marvel Stadium in Victoria, Melbourne. The event garnered $5,478,345 in gate revenue, with 559,000 PPV buys.
