taker started his martial arts journey at age 7 when he started learning Goju-Ruy Karate. He trained in it for 8 years and got his black belt before switching to Hapkido. After his Hapkido gym was turned into an MMA gym, Whittaker started pursuing Mix Martial Arts.
Robert made his MMA debut in 2009 against Chris Tallowin at XFC 14. He defeated Tallowin via TKO (punches). Following this, he signed up with CFC(Cage Fighting Championships).
Whittaker made his CFC debut against Richard Walsh at CFC 11.
He won the fight via rear-naked-choke submission in the second round. Whittaker won his next 5-fights in the promotion before fighting Hoon Kim at Legend Fighting Championship 6. Hoon handed Whittaker his first defeat as he got him to submit in the first round via triangle choke submission.
He bounced back from the loss and defeated Ian Bome via TKO (punches) at CFC 19. Following this, he fought against Shaun Spooner for the Superfight Australia Welterweight Championship at Superfight Australia 13. He defeated Spooner in the first round via TKO to become the new champion. Robert then fought Jesse Juarez for the CFC Welterweight Championship at CFC 21. He lost the fight via unanimous decision. This was Robert's last CFC fight as he joined the Ultimate Fighter: The Smashes.
Robert Whittaker fought Israel Adesanya at UFC 243 for the UFC Middleweight Championship. The first round saw back and forth between the fighters with, Adesanya dropping Whittaker with a right-hand right before the bell.
